Identification of factors controlling heavy metals/metalloid distribution in agricultural soils using multi-source data

Wenbo Deng et al.

Summary: Understanding the factors controlling agricultural soil heavy metals/metalloids distribution is crucial for soil remediation and management. A study conducted in the Guanzhong Plain, China, analyzed 227 agricultural soils and identified soil properties as the major influencing factor. Sequential multivariate statistical analysis, stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR), and partial least squares regression (PLS) were used to predict heavy metals/metalloid concentrations. The results suggested that inorganic colloid particles should be targeted for heavy metals/metalloid contamination treatment in regions with high pH and low organic matter content.

Integrated effects of bioturbation, warming and sea-level rise on mobility of sulfide and metalloids in sediment porewater of mangrove wetlands

Feng Pan et al.

Summary: Global warming and sea-level rise have significant effects on coastal mangrove ecosystems, particularly on the behavior of benthic crabs and their impact on sediment properties and material cycles. This study explores how crab bioturbation affects the movement of bioavailable arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), and sulfide in sediment-water systems, and how these processes are influenced by temperature and sea-level rise. The results indicate that crab burrowing enhances oxidizing conditions, leading to increased mobilization and release of Sb but sequestration of As by iron/manganese oxides. The study also highlights the spatial heterogeneity of labile sulfide, As, and Sb in bioturbated sediments, and the contrasting effects of warming and sea-level rise on benthic bioturbation and redox chemistry.

Nutrient pollution and its remediation using constructed wetlands: Insights into removal and recovery mechanisms, modifications and sustainable aspects

Tuhin Kamilya et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are effective processes for the removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from nutrient-rich wastewater. Vertical flow CWs are more efficient in removing phosphorus, while horizontal flow CWs are more efficient in removing nitrogen. The performance of CWs can be significantly improved through the introduction of artificial aeration, external carbon sources, variation of plant species and substrate, and bioaugmentation. Hybrid CWs can achieve enhanced total nitrogen removal and recovery, but have little effect on phosphorus removal. Recommendations include incorporating hydrochar and oyster shells as substrate modifications, as well as providing suitable pre-treatment methods.

Dominant environmental factors influencing soil metal concentrations of Poyang Lake wetland, China: Soil property, topography, plant species and wetland type

Jinying Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of environmental factors on soil metal concentrations in Poyang Lake wetland, finding that soil properties, wetland type, and topography played important roles in influencing metal accumulation in the soil. Nutrients in soil significantly promoted metal aggregation, while lower elevations favored metal accumulation. Plant species also showed correlations with specific metals in soils, providing a theoretical basis for maintaining healthy wetland ecosystems.
