Determination of metallic nanoparticles in air filters by means single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Daniel Torregrosa et al.

Summary: Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) has been used to determine metallic nanoparticles (NPs) in air. Different extraction strategies and extracting solvents were investigated, and a method for extracting metallic NPs from filters in 4 minutes was developed. The study also found that microquartz fiber filters had better NPs capturing performance. This method has been successfully applied to detect NPs in environmental monitoring stations.

A two-dimensional nanoparticle characterization method combining differential mobility analyzer and single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry with an atomizer-enabled sample introduction (ATM-DMA-spICP-MS): Toward the analysis of heteroaggregated nanoparticles in wastewater

Yi-Chin Hsieh et al.

Summary: This study presents a two-dimensional size analysis method using differential mobility analyzer (DMA) and single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) with a new atomizer (ATM)-enabled sample introduction. By heating the aerosol flow, the tailing of electrical mobility size distributions was solved, and the method showed good sizing performance in analyzing mixed nanoparticles sizes. The method has the potential to characterize heteroaggregated nanoparticles (NPs) in aqueous environmental samples.

Separating dissolved silver from nanoparticulate silver is the key: Improved cloud-point-extraction hyphenated to single particle ICP-MS for comprehensive analysis of silver-based nanoparticles in real environmental samples down to single-digit nm particle sizes

Andreas Wimmer et al.

Summary: Investigating silver-based nanoparticles (Ag-b-NPs) in environmental samples poses a challenge due to their low concentrations and the presence of high quantities of dissolved Ag(I) species. Despite promising, the current sp-ICP-MS technique struggles with high background signals from coexisting dissolved analyte species, limiting its size detection limit (SDL) to around 20 nm. By combining surfactant-mediated sample pre-treatment (iCPE) with sp-ICP-MS, researchers were able to significantly reduce the SDL to 4.5 nm, allowing for successful monitoring of Ag-b-NPs in the environment.

Pragati Rai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and sources of ambient particle elements in urban Beijing during November and December 2017, using an online multi-element analyzer. The results showed that biomass burning, coal combustion, secondary sulfate, industry, non-exhaust traffic, and dust are the main sources influencing PM10 and PM2.5, with varying contributions during different seasons and haze events.
