Extreme heat increases stomatal conductance and drought-induced mortality risk in vulnerable plant species

Renee M. Marchin et al.

Summary: Tree mortality during global-change-type drought is often attributed to xylem dysfunction, but with the increase in extreme heat events due to climate change, understanding the interaction of heat stress is crucial. Drought-stressed plants may open stomata in heatwaves to prevent leaves from critically overheating. The inclusion of thermal safety margins (TSM) and responses to heat stress could enhance predictions of tree species vulnerability to future droughts.

Decoupling between ecosystem photosynthesis and transpiration: a last resort against overheating

Christopher Krich et al.

Summary: In the face of more frequent extreme high temperatures in the future, research has found evidence of decoupling between photosynthesis and transpiration, which can prevent lethal leaf temperatures. The occurrence of decoupling depends on ecosystem characteristics and canopy energy balance. However, the occurrence of this decoupling phenomenon is still limited. Causal-inference approaches are valuable for analyzing complex physiological processes.

On the Treatment of Soil Water Stress in GCM Simulations of Vegetation Physiology

P. L. Vidale et al.

Summary: The current land surface models in weather and climate models use coupled photosynthesis-stomatal conductance models to determine surface fluxes governing terrestrial energy, water and carbon budgets. Different methods represent plant water stress, with most implementing a water stress factor beta. Implementing new beta treatments that allow soil moisture to limit plant function non-linearly has been found to have significant implications for predicting water and carbon fluxes, especially under extreme climate conditions. This study demonstrates the need for more sophisticated modeling approaches to accurately simulate vegetation response to soil water stress and its impacts on climate prediction and response to climate change.

Stomatal, mesophyll and biochemical limitations to soil drought and rewatering in relation to intrinsic water-use efficiency in Manchurian ash and Mongolian oak

K. Zhu et al.

Summary: The balance between stomatal and mesophyll conductance directly influences intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi). This study found that variations in stomatal and mesophyll limitations (l(sc) and l(m)) affect WUEi during soil drought and rewatering in Manchurian ash and Mongolian oak saplings. Photosynthesis limitations directly influenced WUEi, with higher WUEi after rewatering due to biochemical capacity weakening at the expense of diffusional limitations. Stomatal closure was more limiting to net photosynthesis in Mongolian oak, leading to consistently higher WUEi possibly due to a more developed root system and larger leaf hydraulic conductance.

Evidence of anthropogenic impacts on global drought frequency, duration, and intensity

Summary: Most studies have focused on the impacts of human activity on mean or extreme climate variables and neglected exploring drought characteristics. The research demonstrates that human activity has increased the frequency, duration, and intensity of drought events globally.

A global non-invasive methodology for the phenotyping of potato under water deficit conditions using imaging, physiological and molecular tools

M. Musse et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of water stress on potato plants using innovative approaches in MRI, phenotyping, and molecular biology. The response of potato plants to water stress varied depending on the intensity and duration of the stress. Quantitative analysis of leaves and tubers at microstructural and molecular levels provided insights into the plant response to water stress.

Improvement of modeling plant responses to low soil moisture in JULESvn4.9 and evaluation against flux tower measurements

Anna B. Harper et al.

Summary: Research has shown that three alternative approaches to calculating soil moisture stress produce more realistic results for most biomes and climates compared to the default parameterization. Increasing the number of soil layers and depth, using soil matric potential instead of volumetric water content, and allowing plants to access moisture in deeper soil layers all improve the simulation outcomes.
