Machine Learning Approach to Model Physical Fatigue during Incremental Exercise among Firefighters

Denisse Bustos et al.

Summary: Physical fatigue poses a serious threat to firefighters, leading to decreased cognitive abilities and increased risk of accidents. This study developed a prediction model for physical fatigue using cardiorespiratory and thermoregulatory measures, along with machine learning algorithms. The XGBoosted Trees algorithm achieved high accuracy in recognizing low and severe levels of fatigue. The study also evaluated different methods for assessing the model's performance and highlighted the advantages of using multiple physiological measures for fatigue modeling.

Occupational Hazards in Firefighting: Systematic Literature Review

Maria F. Cuenca-Lozano et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzes the risks and consequences faced by firefighters, and provides recommendations to improve safety management systems. The study found data on mechanical, physical, chemical, and psychosocial risks, as well as perception and resilience of firefighters. It also detailed information on falls, noise exposure, and high carbon monoxide concentrations. The use of personal protective equipment, incorporation of information on risk factors in prevention programs, and implementation of models to predict worker perception are suggested preventive measures.

The effect of cranial techniques on the heart rate variability response to psychological stress test in firefighter cadets

Malgorzata Wojcik et al.

Summary: Heart rate variability (HRV) is a simple tool to monitor cardiovascular stress. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cranial techniques on HRV parameters. The results showed that cranial techniques have a significant impact on heart rate and low frequency, but not on high frequency. However, the control group showed significant differences in heart rate, high frequency, and low frequency. Therefore, cranial techniques and touch may have a beneficial effect on HRV, reducing cardiovascular stress.

Cardiac autonomic and cortisol stress responses to real operations in surgeons: relationship with individual psychobiological characteristics and experience

Luca Carnevali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effects of real operations on cardiac autonomic function and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in surgeons, as well as the moderating role of individual psychobiological characteristics and experience levels. The results showed that real operations triggered stress responses in both cardiac autonomic function and cortisol levels, regardless of experience. These responses did not affect cardiac autonomic activity during the following night but were associated with a blunted cortisol awakening response. It was also found that senior surgeons had higher levels of negative affectivity and depressive symptoms compared to expert surgeons, and the magnitude of heart rate responses to surgery correlated with negative affectivity, depression, perceived stress, and trait anxiety scores.

Changes in biochemical markers following a spinal manipulation - a systematic review update

Kesava Kovanur Sampath et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to update the current evidence on the influence of spinal manipulation on various biochemical markers in healthy and/or symptomatic population. Fifteen trials were included in the review, and the results showed that spinal manipulation may influence inflammatory markers and cortisol levels. However, further research is needed to establish the clinical relevance of these changes.

Electroacupuncture alleviates anxiety and modulates amygdala CRH/CRHR1 signaling in single prolonged stress mice

Jing Zhu et al.

Summary: This study found that electroacupuncture (EA) can improve fear and anxiety behavior in mice with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By investigating the changes in CRH/CRHR1 signaling in the amygdala, the study suggests that CRH/CRHR1 signaling may play an important role in the anxiolytic effect of EA in mice with PTSD.

Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Physical Activity for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases in the Elderly

Lorena Ciumarnean et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases have a significant impact on the health of the elderly, who often suffer from multiple comorbidities. Accumulated cardiovascular risk factors during one's lifetime can negatively affect the health status of older adults. Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus, as metabolic comorbidities, are closely linked to cardiovascular diseases in the elderly.

A Scoping Review on the Prevalence and Determinants of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Military Personnel and Firefighters: Implications for Public Policy and Practice

Gloria Obuobi-Donkor et al.

Summary: Firefighters and military personnel are at increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This scoping review examined the global prevalence of PTSD among this cohort and identified predictors of the condition. The results showed that firefighters had a PTSD prevalence of 57%, while military personnel had a prevalence of 37.8%. Demographic factors, job factors, social support, and other individual traits were found to be the main predictors of PTSD in this population.

Vincent B. Van Hasselt et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest and concern surrounding the mental and physical health of firefighters, with research indicating higher rates of psychiatric problems and physical health difficulties in this population compared to civilians. However, behavioral research specifically targeting firefighters remains limited. The Special Issue aims to stimulate further behavioral research in this area and serves as a tribute to the brave men and women of the fire service.

Neuroticism Trait and Mental Health Among Chinese Firefighters: The Moderating Role of Perceived Organizational Support and the Mediating Role of Burnout-A Path Analysis

Yanqiang Tao et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between neuroticism and job burnout among firefighters in China, with a focus on the moderating effects of perceived organizational support (POS). The study found that two components of burnout, depersonalization and emotional exhaustion, significantly mediated the relationship between neuroticism and anxiety and depression. Additionally, POS reinforced the relationship between neuroticism and depersonalization and emotional exhaustion. The findings have important implications for improving firefighters' mental health.

Anxiety and Depression: What Do We Know of Neuropeptides?

Ida Kupcova et al.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are on the rise in modern society, causing significant impact on mental health and potentially leading to suicides. Despite the availability of antidepressants and anxiolytics, achieving remission in many patients remains a challenge. Researchers have turned their attention to neuropeptides, which are a diverse group of signaling molecules in the nervous system, in an effort to better understand the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety. This review examines the current knowledge on neuropeptides, their involvement in stress adaptation, and their potential implications for future research and therapy.
