Effect of corrosion on the buckling behaviour of cold-formed steel channel section columns under axial compression

Biao Nie et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation on the buckling behaviour of corroded cold-formed steel (CFS) channel section columns under axial compression. The study discusses the effects of corrosion on the failure modes, load-strain curves, and load-axial displacement curves of the columns. It also proposes a calculation method for corroded CFS channel section columns based on the corrosion morphology.

Surface characteristic of corroded cold-formed thin-walled steel in industrial environments

Li Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution law of surface characteristic of corroded cold-formed thin-walled steel in industrial environments. Five test specimens sourced from cold-formed thin-walled C-shaped steel were subjected to surface characteristic test. The results show that the evolution law of the surface morphology of corroded cold-formed thin-walled steel and corroded hot-rolled steel is similar, and the surface parameters are related to the average corrosion depth.

Compressive behaviour of corroded thin-walled circular section steel stub columns

Song Sha-Sha et al.

Summary: This research experimentally and numerically investigates the influences of corrosion on the buckling behaviour and bearing capacity of circular section steel tubular (CST) stub columns subjected to axial compression. A novel method considering the natural morphology of surface corrosion is proposed and verified. The study also reveals that the rough surface of corroded specimens leads to non-uniform stress distribution and changes in the buckling mode. The proposed design formula can accurately predict the axial compression strength of rusty stub columns.

A critical review of cold-formed steel seismic resistant systems: Recent developments, challenges and future directions

Maryam Hasanali et al.

Summary: Cold-formed steel (CFS) systems are widely used in the construction of low-to mid-rise buildings due to their advantages such as low weight, ease of construction, recyclability, and low carbon emissions. However, designing lateral force-resisting systems (LFRS) for CFS multi-story buildings is challenging. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the research developments in CFS braced-wall systems and moment-resisting frames, summarizing their load capacity, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity, and failure mode. The findings suggest that CFS LFRSs offer efficient design solutions with high ductility and energy dissipation capacity, but further research is needed.

Shear capacity of H-shaped steel beam with randomly located pitting corrosion

Zhongwei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the influence of corrosion on the shear capacity of H-shaped steel beams, proposing a relationship between shear capacity and mass loss ratio, and presenting an analytical method for predicting the residual shear capacity of corroded steel beams. The results show high accuracy in predicting the shear capacity of H-shaped steel beams with corroded web, making the proposed method applicable for different material strengths.

Mechanical behavior of locally corroded circular steel tube under compression

Yuan Wei et al.

Summary: Localized corrosion can significantly reduce the load carrying capacity and safety performance of steel structures. A calculation method was proposed based on experimental and numerical studies to predict the load carrying capacity of locally corroded circular steel tubes under compression. Factors affecting the degradation of load carrying capacity and stiffness of localized corrosion specimens were identified.
