Structural Origins of Viscosity in Imidazolium and Pyrrolidinium Ionic Liquids Coupled with the NTf2 - Anion

Raphael Ogbodo et al.

Summary: This article investigates the structural origin of differences in the viscosity and viscoelastic relaxation of several ionic liquids. It reveals that pyrrolidinium-based ions are harder than imidazolium-based ions. Moreover, a connection between hardness and specific structural and structural dynamic quantities is established through scattering experiments and simulations.

Pressure-induced liquid-liquid transition in a family of ionic materials

Zaneta Wojnarowska et al.

Summary: The authors report and characterize a first-order liquid-liquid transition (LLT) in a series of ionic liquids, providing insight into the structure-property relationships governing LLT. Ion dynamics exhibit anomalous behavior during the LLT, with dramatically elongated conductivity relaxation times and broader distribution. The discontinuity in specific volume at LLT was estimated using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, showing that LLT has an isochronal character similar to liquid-glass transition.

Complete Description of the LaCl3-NaCl Melt Structure and the Concept of a Spacer Salt That Causes Structural Heterogeneity

Matthew S. Emerson et al.

Summary: Lanthanides are important fission products in molten salt reactors, and understanding their structure and that of their mixtures is relevant to many scientific and technological problems. However, the literature on this topic is often fragmented and contradictory, necessitating the need for a clear and unified understanding of the structure. This article aims to answer specific questions about the structure of lanthanide salts.

Evidence of a liquid-liquid transition in a glass-forming ionic liquid

Matthew A. Harris et al.

Summary: A liquid-liquid transition (LLT) is a transformation from one liquid to another through a first-order transition, fundamental to understanding the liquid state. While LLT has been reported in some materials, experimental evidence for its existence in many molecular liquids remains controversial. Studying the local order and structural dynamics across an LLT provides unprecedented possibilities for understanding the nature of the liquid state.

Relationship between the Relaxation of Ionic Liquid Structural Motifs and That of the Shear Viscosity

Weththasinghage D. Amith et al.

Summary: By studying alkylimidazolium ILs, it was found that the structural relaxation time scales are not the same across different family members, and the relaxation of charge alternation is significantly affected by the presence of polar and apolar domains. However, charge alternation still contributes a similar amount to the integral of the stress tensor correlation function across different systems.

A Brief Guide to the Structure of High-Temperature Molten Salts and Key Aspects Making Them Different from Their Low-Temperature Relatives, the Ionic Liquids

Shobha Sharma et al.

Summary: Research on high-temperature molten salts is experiencing a resurgence due to their advantages in clean and sustainable energy applications. Past studies may require revision due to limitations in experimental setups, while access to isotopically substituted ions presents challenges for current research. This perspective article aims to provide a guide for researchers transitioning between ionic liquids and molten salts, focusing on structural features and force field requirements.

Unraveling Local Structure of Molten Salts via X-ray Scattering, Raman Spectroscopy, and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics

Santanu Roy et al.

Summary: By employing a multimodal approach and theoretical modeling, researchers in this work successfully resolved issues concerning the local structure of molten MgCl2. They demonstrated the reliability of AIMD simulations in achieving excellent agreement between experimental and simulated spectra, providing structural insights not directly available from experiments alone.

X-ray scattering reveals ion clustering of dilute chromium species in molten chloride medium

Santanu Roy et al.

Summary: This study reveals the clustering behavior of dilute Cr3+ metal ions in molten salt and demonstrates that the dynamical processes are primarily controlled by the charge density of the constituent ions. These findings challenge assumptions about specific ionic interactions and transport in molten salts.
