Fish disease and intestinal microbiota: A close and indivisible relationship

Diana Medina-Felix et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota in fish, which includes bacteria, archaea, yeast, and fungus, plays a crucial role in various functions such as food digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune response. The interaction between the microbiota and pathogens can either protect the host or lead to dysbiosis and diseases. Understanding these interactions is important for preventing pathogen establishment in fish hosts.

Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Transfer to Seawater by Gradual Salinity Changes Exhibited an Increase in The Intestinal Microbial Abundance and Richness

Maria F. Morales-Rivera et al.

Summary: This study explored the diversity and abundance of the Atlantic salmon intestinal microbiota and metagenome functional prediction during seawater transfer under three treatments. The results showed an influence of salinity changes on Atlantic salmon gut microbiota richness, diversity, and taxonomic composition. The reported knowledge can be applied to surveil the microbiome in smolt fish production, improving the performance of Atlantic salmon to seawater transfer.

A longitudinal survey in the wild reveals major shifts in fish host microbiota after parasite infection

Eglantine Mathieu-Begne et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that there is a link between diseases and host microbiota. It is difficult to determine whether host microbiota promote infections or whether infections result in changes in host microbiota, especially in natural conditions. However, understanding this is crucial for understanding the role of microbes in disease progression.

Elevated estuary water temperature drives fish gut dysbiosis and increased loads of pathogenic vibrionaceae

Alessandra L. Suzzi et al.

Summary: Marine water temperatures are increasing globally, with eastern Australian estuaries warming faster than predicted. Rapid warming of coastal waters is increasing the abundance and virulence of pathogenic Vibrionaceae, posing health risks. The impact of rising sea surface temperatures on the microbiology of wild fish populations, particularly within estuarine systems, is not well understood. This study found that fish guts under thermal stress exhibited a state of dysbiosis with a proliferation of potential fish pathogens. Future warming is likely to drive opportunistic pathogen increases in estuarine fish.

Summary: 16S ribosomal RNA-based analysis is the standard method for studying microbial community composition. Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences have the potential to provide species-level accuracy. Emu is an approach that can generate taxonomic abundance profiles from full-length 16S rRNA reads, accurately estimating microbial abundance.

Effects of water temperature on the gut microbiome and physiology of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) reared in a freshwater recirculating system

Konstanze Steiner et al.

Summary: Climate change and global warming have significant impacts on the aquaculture industry, especially on the health and growth performance of fish due to water temperature. This study assessed the effects of different water temperatures in a freshwater recirculating aquaculture system on the gut microbiome, physiology, health, and growth of Chinook Salmon in New Zealand. The results showed that increased water temperature led to changes in feed intake, growth, gut microbiome composition, histology, fatty acids, and various internal biometrics of the fish. These findings contribute to a better understanding of how water temperature influences the holobiont of Chinook Salmon and its implications for fish growth and health.

Transcriptome profiling of the early developmental stages in the giant mussel Choromytilus chorus exposed to delousing drugs

Gustavo Nunez-Acuna et al.

Summary: This study explores the transcriptome modulation of the giant mussel Choromytilus chorus after exposure to delousing drugs. Significant transcriptional changes were found between different larval development stages exposed to the drugs, mainly affecting processes related to development such as cell movement and transcriptional activity. Additionally, long non-coding RNAs associated with matrix metalloproteinases, collagenases, and transcription factors were also identified.

Temperature modulation alters the gut and skin microbial profiles of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)

Subrata Kumar Ghosh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of temperature on the bacterial community structure and diversity of temperate salmon in the Pacific. The results showed that temperature changes disrupted the balance of gut and skin microbiota, potentially affecting host immunity. Temperature also influenced the assembly processes of microbial communities, which may disrupt the equilibrium of the microbiota.

Early life stress causes persistent impacts on the microbiome of Atlantic salmon

Tamsyn M. Uren Webster et al.

Summary: The study revealed that early environmental stress can have different effects on the gut and skin microbiome structure of Atlantic salmon fry, including pronounced lasting effects of acute cold stress on the skin microbiome structure and an impact of chronic post-hatching stress on gut microbiome structure. Both types of stress promoted similar Gammaproteobacteria ASVs, particularly within the genera Acinetobacter and Aeromonas, suggesting potential health impacts on the host.

Raquel S. Peixoto et al.

Summary: Host-associated microbiomes play a crucial role in maintaining the homeostasis of the metaorganism by providing nutrition, aiding growth and development, protecting against pathogens, and more. Understanding the diversity and importance of animal microbiomes can lead to the development of microbe-based therapies to promote animal health and sustainable husbandry practices. Threats associated with animal biodiversity loss, microorganism extinction, and emerging diseases like the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the need for further research and conservation efforts in this area.

A comparison of two seawater adaptation strategies for Atlantic salmon post-smolt (Salmo salar) grown in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS): Nitrification, water and gut microbiota, and performance of fish

Ragnhild O. Fossmark et al.

Summary: The land-based production phase in Norwegian Atlantic salmon farming has been expanded in recent years to include post-smolt for more farmers. Research on salinity increase in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) showed stability in bacterial communities at different salinities, high inter-individual variation in fish gut microbiota, and adaptability of nitrifying bacteria to different salinities. Salinity was identified as a driver for succession in RAS, with other factors such as organic load and stochastic processes also influencing bacterial community dynamics.
