Efficient continuous dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in ternary solvent system

Pengru Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient flow-through system was developed for continuous production of HMF, and the reaction variables were comprehensively investigated. High selectivity and yield of HMF were achieved using a H2O/dioxane/methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) ternary solvent system and Amberlyst 70 catalyst. The addition of dioxane enhanced the interactions between fructose, water, and cosolvent, while in-situ extraction by MIBK protected HMF from unfavorable side reactions. The method also showed promising selectivity for fructose dehydration from fructose-glucose mixtures, with potential for industrial applications.

Sn doping on partially dealuminated Beta zeolite by solid state ion exchange for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) production from glucose

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The Sn-Al-Beta catalysts prepared by solid state ion exchange method showed excellent catalytic performance in the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF in an ionic liquid. Among them, Sn-Al-Beta-4-8 exhibited the best catalytic performance, achieving a 5-HMF yield of 54% and a glucose conversion of 81%. The catalyst and ionic liquid could be regenerated by extracting 5-HMF and maintained good catalytic activity after five cycles of recycling. Moreover, the Sn-Al-Beta-4-8/[C(4)mim]Cl system also showed potential in converting other carbohydrates into 5-HMF.

Sustainable Catalytic Process for Fructose Dehydration using Dicationic Ionic Liquid Assisted ZSM-5 Zeolite

Divya Prasad et al.

Summary: A dicationic ionic liquid (IL) was synthesized as a template for the synthesis of ZSM-5 zeolite, resulting in structural alterations and enhanced catalytic performance for the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The presence of dicationic IL led to changes in the surface area and porous nature of ZSM-5, contributing to the superior catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions. Most importantly, the newly developed dicationic IL-assisted zeolite ZSM-5 catalyst showed recyclability for four recycles as a solid catalyst.
