Au nanoparticles-anchored defective metal-organic frameworks for photocatalytic transformation of amines to imines under visible light

Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated Au nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated defective DUT-67(Zr) (Au@DUT-67(Zr)) photocatalyst with enlarged channels, achieving 7.5 times higher conversion than Au NPs-decorated UiO-66(Zr) (Au@UiO-66(Zr)) for selective photocatalytic oxidation of amines to imines driven by visible light. The partially hollow structure of DUT-67(Zr) enables effective fixation of Au NPs. Au@DUT-67(Zr) possesses more active sites including unsaturated Zr atoms and oxygen vacancies (VO) compared to Au@UiO-66(Zr). In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum reveals the activation of benzylamine on unsaturated Zr sites and the capturing of plasmonic hot electrons by VO, enhancing the formation of superoxide radical (O-.(2)) and achieving selective oxidation of benzylamine. A possible synergetic mechanism combining plasmon with molecular activation is presented.

Removal of anionic and cationic dyes using porous chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose-PEG hydrogels: Optimization, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics studies

Honglin Zhu et al.

Summary: Chitosan (CS)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) porous hydrogels crosslinked by epichlorohydrin and with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a pore-forming agent were synthesized for removal of anionic (Congo red, CR) and cationic (methylene blue, MB) dyes from aqueous solutions. The addition of PEG significantly increased the adsorption of CR and MB, with optimal performance observed for hydrogels prepared with 2% CS and 2% CMC (CS2/CMC2). The adsorption processes followed pseudosecond-order and pseudo-first-order kinetics models for CR and MB, respectively. Freundlich and Langmuir models were suitable for describing the adsorption isotherms of CR and MB, respectively. The thermodynamic study confirmed that the adsorption of CR and MB by the hydrogels was spontaneous, with CR adsorption being endothermic and MB adsorption being exothermic.
