Summary: This study successfully fabricated Au nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated defective DUT-67(Zr) (Au@DUT-67(Zr)) photocatalyst with enlarged channels, achieving 7.5 times higher conversion than Au NPs-decorated UiO-66(Zr) (Au@UiO-66(Zr)) for selective photocatalytic oxidation of amines to imines driven by visible light. The partially hollow structure of DUT-67(Zr) enables effective fixation of Au NPs. Au@DUT-67(Zr) possesses more active sites including unsaturated Zr atoms and oxygen vacancies (VO) compared to Au@UiO-66(Zr). In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum reveals the activation of benzylamine on unsaturated Zr sites and the capturing of plasmonic hot electrons by VO, enhancing the formation of superoxide radical (O-.(2)) and achieving selective oxidation of benzylamine. A possible synergetic mechanism combining plasmon with molecular activation is presented.

Summary: Chitosan (CS)/carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) porous hydrogels crosslinked by epichlorohydrin and with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a pore-forming agent were synthesized for removal of anionic (Congo red, CR) and cationic (methylene blue, MB) dyes from aqueous solutions. The addition of PEG significantly increased the adsorption of CR and MB, with optimal performance observed for hydrogels prepared with 2% CS and 2% CMC (CS2/CMC2). The adsorption processes followed pseudosecond-order and pseudo-first-order kinetics models for CR and MB, respectively. Freundlich and Langmuir models were suitable for describing the adsorption isotherms of CR and MB, respectively. The thermodynamic study confirmed that the adsorption of CR and MB by the hydrogels was spontaneous, with CR adsorption being endothermic and MB adsorption being exothermic.

Summary: Two responsive PEI hydrogels (P1.5E and P2E) with different cross-linking degrees were synthesized using a click reaction and without organic solvents. The hydrogel's swelling and rheological behavior were dependent on the cross-linking degree, and the hydrogels showed stimuli-responsive behavior to pH or ionic strength changes. The hydrogels also exhibited adsorption capacity for methyl orange (MO) dye and Cu2+ ions, with P1.5E showing higher sorption capacities. Germination experiments with lettuce seeds confirmed that the hydrogels did not release toxic molecules.

Summary: In this study, a smart multicomponent hydrogel with pH-responsive and self-healing properties was developed. The hydrogel exhibited unprecedented changes in viscoelasticity, stretchability, adhesiveness, and self-adaptability upon pH and concentration variations. By harnessing the dynamic nature of covalent and non-covalent interactions, the hydrogel's adhesive and stretchable properties were tuned in response to pH changes. The self-healing ability of the hydrogel was thoroughly investigated, showing 100% self-healing within a time frame of 2-6 min. The hydrogel's mechanical strength and stability were pH-dependent, with disintegration occurring above pH 7. The hydrogel's characteristics were characterized using FTIR, FESEM, and TGA analysis.

Summary: The increasing demand for copper resources and the accompanying pollution have created an urgent need for effective materials for copper binding and extraction. This study investigates the interaction between copper ions and PEI-silica nanocomposite particles and precursor PEI microgels. The results show that PEI-silica composites have enhanced copper binding capacity compared to the parent microgels, and the presence of silica nanoparticles increases the number of copper-binding sites in the PEI network. The PEI-silica composites can be easily recycled by washing in nitric acid, allowing for multiple cycles of efficient copper removal and extraction.
