Evaluating the Performance of Low-cost PM Sensors over Multiple COALESCE Network Sites

Vishal R. Dharaiya et al.

Summary: Air quality is a global concern, and low-cost sensors offer an effective way to monitor it in real-time. In this study, PM2.5 concentrations measured by low-cost sensors in four regional sites in India were evaluated and compared with satellite-based model MERRA-2 and a reference instrument. The results show that the PM2.5 concentrations were significantly reduced during lockdown periods compared to pre-lockdown periods, although variations were observed across different locations. There were differences between low-cost sensor measurements and MERRA-2 data, which can be attributed to the modeling analysis and biases of the sensors.

Low-Cost Outdoor Air Quality Monitoring and Sensor Calibration: A Survey and Critical Analysis

Francesco Concas et al.

Summary: The significance of air pollution and the associated problems are driving the deployment of air quality monitoring stations worldwide. Low-cost air quality sensors have emerged as an alternative to improve monitoring granularity, but they face challenges such as cross-sensitivities, external factors, and degradation of accuracy over time. Periodic recalibration, particularly with machine-learning-based calibration, can enhance the accuracy of these sensors.

Calibrating low-cost sensors for ambient air monitoring: Techniques, trends, and challenges

Lu Liang

Summary: The global sensor market is rapidly expanding due to surging needs, but calibration efforts have been focused on a limited selection of sensors. Relative humidity correction, regression, and machine learning are the mainstream calibration techniques. Machine learning is a key trend in calibration, but issues such as calibration duration and spatial mismatch still need to be addressed.

Laboratory Evaluation of Low-Cost Optical Particle Counters for Environmental and Occupational Exposures

Sinan Sousan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated four low-cost PM sensors in both environmental and occupational settings. SPS30 and OPC-N3 showed high correlation with the reference instrument in environmental settings, while OPC-N3's correlation varied in occupational settings. Response significantly varied between settings, with biases varying by particle size and aerosol type.
