Multivariate Analysis of Metabolomic and Nutritional Profiles among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Fatir Qureshi et al.

Summary: Statistical and machine-learning techniques show promise in providing insights into unique metabolomic patterns in individuals with ASD. This study re-examines the differences in metabolomic and nutrient measurements between children with ASD and typically developing peers using multivariate statistical analysis. The findings support prior work and highlight prominent areas of divergence between the two groups. Improved analysis reveals significant differences in 46 nutritional/metabolic measurements between ASD and TD groups, with strong correlations between many of these measurements. Multivariate techniques identify potential biomarker panels that can accurately discriminate between ASD and TD, with high predictive accuracy following cross-validation. The study also confirms previously identified physiological pathways and important metabolites associated with ASD.

Acylcarnitines: Nomenclature, Biomarkers, Therapeutic Potential, Drug Targets, and Clinical Trials

Maija Dambrova et al.

Summary: Acylcarnitines are fatty acid metabolites that play important roles in cellular energy metabolism and have potential as biomarkers and pharmaceutical agents for various diseases. This comprehensive review provides detailed information on the identity, nomenclature, classification, biochemistry, pathophysiology, and clinical trials of acylcarnitines. It also discusses their use as dietary supplements and the emerging opportunities for using them as biomarkers and interventions in different indications. The review lays a solid foundation for further understanding the physiological roles of acylcarnitines and the identification of new drug targets.

Plasma and Fecal Metabolite Profiles in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Brittany D. Needham et al.

Summary: The study used mass spectrometry methods to identify metabolic differences between children with ASD and typically developing children. The findings indicated differences in amino acid, lipid, and xenobiotic metabolism, implicating oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, hormone level elevations, lipid profile changes, and altered levels of phenolic microbial metabolites. These results suggest a link between metabolism, gastrointestinal physiology, and complex behavioral traits in ASD.

Paving the Way toward Personalized Medicine: Current Advances and Challenges in Multi-OMICS Approach in Autism Spectrum Disorder for Biomarkers Discovery and Patient Stratification

Areej G. Mesleh et al.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social/communication skills and repetitive behavioral patterns. The prevalence of ASD has increased, with varying severity of symptoms and potential comorbidities. Discovering biomarkers is crucial for early screening of ASD.

Studying Autism Using Untargeted Metabolomics in Newborn Screening Samples

Julie Courraud et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the metabolomic profiles of newborns later diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While no clear distinction between cases and controls was revealed, many metabolites previously associated with ASD were found, suggesting that biochemical markers of ASD may exist at birth and can be monitored through newborn screening.

Distributional Properties and Criterion Validity of a Shortened Version of the Social Responsiveness Scale: Results from the ECHO Program and Implications for Social Communication Research

Kristen Lyall et al.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of predicting autism spectrum disorder between a shortened version and the full version of the Social Responsiveness Scale, finding that they were nearly identical. The findings support the comparability of shortened and full scores, suggesting opportunities to increase efficiency. Future research should confirm additional psychometric properties of shortened scores.
