Thresholds for carcinogens

Edward J. Calabrese et al.

Summary: This study challenges the current linear no-threshold model of cancer risk assessment by proposing an alternative approach based on tumor latency. Evidence suggests that tumor latency is inversely related to dose and that lower doses of carcinogens have quantifiable discrete latency thresholds. This analysis provides theoretical, experimental, and mechanistic rationales for revisiting the foundational assumptions of low-dose linearity and incorporating the concept of carcinogen thresholds into cancer risk assessment practices.
