A new flood chronology for KwaZulu-Natal (1836-2022): the April 2022 Durban floods in historical context

S. W. Grab et al.

Summary: In April 2022, major flooding and geohazards caused significant loss of life and extensive damage in the greater Durban region and KwaZulu-Natal coastal zone. This study fills the gap in the flood record of KZN by documenting historical flood events since the mid-nineteenth century using various sources, and suggests that the frequency of flooding in Durban has doubled over the last century. The research also confirms that the April 2022 floods were the most catastrophic natural disaster recorded in KZN in terms of lives lost and economic impact.

Quantifying and reducing researcher subjectivity in the generation of climate indices from documentary sources

George C. D. Adamson et al.

Summary: This study examines the degree of inter-rater variability in producing index-based climate series and finds that trained historical climatologists working in groups of two or more show minimal variability, providing high reliability in climate reconstructions.

Anthropogenic impacts and implications for ecological restoration in the Karoo, South Africa

Suzanne. J. Milton et al.

Summary: Arid regions globally have suffered ecological damage due to unsustainable exploitation by European colonists displacing nomadic cultures. The Karoo in South Africa, covering one third of the country, now faces challenges from historical land use damage, climate change, and potential new land uses like renewable energy and mining. Insights from the sustainability efforts in the Karoo are relevant for other arid regions facing similar challenges.

Drivers and impacts of changes in China's drylands

Changjia Li et al.

Summary: Global drylands, including China, are at risk of desertification due to anthropogenic climate change and human activities. Large-scale restoration and conservation programmes have shown positive effects in improving land quality and vegetation cover in some dryland areas in China, but challenges still remain in managing and mitigating desertification.

Climate indices in historical climate reconstructions: a global state of the art

David J. Nash et al.

Summary: Narrative evidence within historical documents and inscriptions serves as a valuable record of climate variability, with the common approach of generating ordinal-scale climate indices to convert such qualitative information. There is considerable variability in the types of phenomena reconstructed using an index approach, as well as in the practices of index development across different regions worldwide.
