Sample Size Calculation and Optimal Design for Regression-Based Norming of Tests and Questionnaires

Francesco Innocenti et al.

Summary: To prevent errors in psychological assessment, it is important to have precise test norms. This study proposes a method for sample size planning based on regression-based norming to improve the precision of inference on Z-scores and percentile rank scores. The study derives sampling variance formulas and uses them to determine the optimal design for the normative sample. It also provides formulas to compute the normative sample size based on desired power and precision.

Neuropsychology in Greece: Results from a survey of practicing professionals

Athanasia Liozidou et al.

Summary: Neuropsychology is a rapidly growing specialty in Greece. This study surveyed the current status of neuropsychologists in Greece and found that they primarily engage in assessment, research, rehabilitation, and teaching. They commonly assess individuals with dementia, depression, and stroke, and receive referrals from neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists. The main barriers in the field include the lack of recognized specialty, limited clinical training opportunities, weak professional associations, limited access to neuropsychological instruments, and a lack of willingness to collaborate between professionals. The average monthly income of professionals is relatively low compared to other scientists.

15-Item Version of the Boston Naming Test: Normative Data for the Latin American Spanish-Speaking Adult Population

Ana delCacho-Tena et al.

Summary: The study aims to provide normative data for the 15-item Spanish version of the Boston Naming Test (BNT) for an adult population from eight Latin American countries/regions. Naming is commonly impaired in people with neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury. Multiple regressions were used to analyze the influence of age, education, and sex on naming ability.

Slovak version of the Trail Making Test: Normative data

Eva Malisova et al.

Summary: The Trail Making Test (TMT) is a widely used measure of cognitive function, with this study providing normative data for the Slovak adult population. Age showed positive correlations with TMT scores, while education years were negatively correlated. Gender did not have a significant impact on performance. TMT scores were related to processing speed and executive functions.

Automated neuropsychological assessment metrics (v4) military expanded battery: Normative data for special operations forces

Heather G. Belanger et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of demographic factors on the ANAM4 ME performance in Special Operations Forces, finding that performance differences based on demographics were generally small. Results indicated that increasing age was associated with worse performance, while higher education level was linked to better performance on most subtests but worse performance on spatial processing. This paper provides regression formulas for calculating adjusted scores based on relevant demographic variables and base rates of obtaining above or below average scores across the ANAM4 ME battery.

A Tutorial on Regression-Based Norming of Psychological Tests With GAMLSS

Marieke E. Timmerman et al.

Summary: Norm-referenced scores are used to position individuals within a reference population, often depending on individual characteristics such as age and sex. Regression-based norming is preferred over traditional methods due to its flexibility, realistic norms, and efficiency in achieving precision with smaller sample sizes. Using generalized additive models can help in deriving normed scores for psychological tests, as demonstrated with intelligence test IDS-2 normative data provided in the tutorial.

Summary: The study found that Spanish-English bilingualism did not significantly impact the normed test scores beyond the standard demographic adjustments on most tests. However, higher Spanish-English bilingualism was associated with higher education and SES, leading to higher raw scores on all tests, but only higher T-scores on a limited number of tests.

Validation of Discrete and Regression-Based Performance and Cognitive Fatigability Normative Data for the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test in Multiple Sclerosis

Caitlin S. Walker et al.

Summary: The study validated the use of PASAT discrete and regression-based norms for measuring performance and cognitive fatigability in individuals with MS. The results showed that the 3-second PASAT was effective in detecting cognitive fatigability in MS patients, and using halves or thirds for calculating cognitive fatigability scores was equally effective. Additionally, both discrete and regression-based norms classified a similar proportion of individuals with MS as having impaired performance and cognitive fatigability.
