The effect of liquid phase chemistry on the densification and strength of cold sintered ZnO

Abdullah Jabr et al.

Summary: Cold sintering is a chemo-mechanical densification process that enables ceramics to be densified at low temperatures below 300 degrees C. This paper investigates the effect of different commercial organic acids, namely formic, acetic, and citric acid, on the densification, microstructural evolution, and mechanical response of cold-sintered ZnO. The results show that formic and acetic acid achieve high relative densities (>96%), while citric acid exhibits poor densification (<80%), despite its higher expected solubility of zinc oxide. Fractographic analyses support the finding of higher biaxial strength in samples sintered with formic acid compared to acetic acid (i.e. -90 MPa vs. -40 MPa).

Fabrication, microstructure, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.94Ba0.06TiO3 nanograined ceramics via cold-sintering-assisted sintering

Li-na Liu et al.

Summary: (Bi0.5Na0.5)(0.94)Ba0.06TiO3 nanograined ferroelectric ceramics were successfully fabricated via a simple cold-sintering-assisted sintering method. The method involves two steps: cold-sintering and post-annealing. The cold-sintered samples with densities as high as 83.7% to 93.6% of the theoretical value were prepared by moistening the powders with de-ionized water followed by compressing under various pressures at 180 degrees C. Effects of cold-sintering time and pressure on densification and microstructure of the cold-sintered samples were studied. After being annealed, the relative densities of the post-annealed ceramics were all higher than 96%. The study provides a simple and efficient method for obtaining dense (Bi0.5Na0.5)(0.94)Ba0.06TiO3 nanograined ferroelectric ceramics at relatively low temperatures with excellent dielectric and ferroelectric properties.
