The Mathematical Meaninglessness of the NASA Task Load Index: A Level of Measurement Analysis

Summary: Human mental workload is crucial in designing and operating systems. The NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) is the standard method for assessing this workload, but its dimensions and computed workload score have not been thoroughly investigated. The research presented in this article evaluated the level of measurement of NASA-TLX workload and dimensions, concluding that the dimensions can be treated as interval in population analyses and ordinal for individuals. However, the methods for combining dimensions into workload scores are found to be meaningless.

Zapline-plus: A Zapline extension for automatic and adaptive removal of frequency-specific noise artifacts in M/EEG

Driving with and without automation on the motorway - an observational study

Summary: The user-related assessment of a level 3 automated driving system on a motorway in Germany showed that drivers used the system as intended and it positively impacted driving behavior in various ways. The system was perceived as useful and satisfactory, but further development is needed to improve its ability to recognize other vehicles' intentions to enter the driver's lane. Additionally, the phenomenon of drivers feeling guilty due to the system's behavior hindering other cars on the motorway should be investigated further.

Underload on the Road: Measuring Vigilance Decrements During Partially Automated Driving

Summary: Partially automated vehicle technology is becoming more common on roads, providing safety benefits but also raising concerns about driver attention. Driving in partially automated mode on highways can lead to vigilance decrements, as drivers are required to do very little and may experience cognitive underload. Research has identified factors contributing to vigilance decrements and highlighted the different methodologies for measuring driver vigilance during partially automated driving.
