The use of trace elements in apatite to trace differentiation of a ferrobasaltic melt in the Sept-Iles Intrusive Suite, Quebec, Canada: Implications for provenance discrimination

Marie A. Kieffer et al.

Summary: The Sept-Iles Intrusive Suite in Quebec, Canada is one of the world's largest mafic layered intrusions. This study examines the potential of using trace elements in apatite as a petrogenetic indicator and proposes new discrimination diagrams for identifying the provenance of igneous rocks. The results show that the trace element content of cumulus apatite records the changing melt composition, and systematic chemical differences in apatite and plagioclase composition are observed in Fe-Ti-P-rich and-poor layers. This research is significant for understanding the formation process of Fe-Ti-P mineralization in mafic layered intrusions.

Accessory phase perspectives for ore-forming processes and magmatic sulphide exploration in the Labrador Trough, northern Quebec, Canada

Summary: The compositions of resistant indicator minerals can provide diagnostic information about their original host environment. In the Montagnais Sill Complex in the Labrador Trough, the compositions of apatite and Fe-Ti oxides were studied, and they were found to be useful for identifying different types of mineral deposits and indicating their direction.

Quantifying metasomatic high-field-strength and rare-earth element transport from alkaline magmas

Krzysztof Sokol et al.

Summary: Alkaline igneous rocks contain abundant high-field-strength element (HFSE) and rare-earth element (REE) deposits. Late-stage hydrothermal fluids associated with alkaline magmas can transport HFSEs. The alteration of country rocks during the emplacement of a syenite magma in Greenland was studied, revealing a tenfold increase in HFSE concentrations. These findings are crucial for understanding the formation of REE-HFSE ores.

Nesrine Mokchah et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of magmatic processes on the evolution of the upper part of the Lac Dore Complex by conducting detailed chemical and petrological investigation. The results showed fractional crystallization and efficient mineral sorting in the southern limb of the Layered zone, while the magma in the northwestern limb was more evolved. The chemical heterogeneities and inefficient homogenization process were also observed across the Layered zone.

Trace element partitioning between clinopyroxene, magnetite, ilmenite and ferrobasaltic to dacitic magmas: an experimental study on the role of oxygen fugacity and melt composition

Kat Shepherd et al.

Summary: Experimental investigations were conducted on the partitioning of trace elements between ilmenite, magnetite, clinopyroxene, and melt in synthetic ferrobasaltic compositions under varying oxygen fugacity and melt composition conditions. The partitioning behavior of different elements was found to be influenced by factors such as melt polymerization, lattice strain, and TiO2 content in the melt. Additionally, a strong correlation between vanadium partitioning and oxygen fugacity was observed, leading to the proposal of vanadium partitioning as an oxybarometer for estimating oxygen fugacity in ferrobasaltic layered intrusions like the Skaergaard intrusion.
