Refined Classical Force Field for Choline Chloride and Ethylene Glycol Mixtures over Wide Composition Range

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a classical force field based on GAFF was refined for the simulation of ChCl/EG mixtures. The force field parameters were adjusted through fitting to experimental data, and the refined force field showed excellent agreement with experimental results. Is ethaline a deep eutectic solvent?

Vira Agieienko et al.

Summary: In this study, the phase behavior of choline chloride (ChCl) + ethylene glycol (EG) mixtures was investigated. It was found that ethaline, the commonly believed eutectic point composition, is actually in the ChCl-saturated region of the phase diagram. The real eutectic point was determined to be at a molar ratio of 1:4.85 of ChCl : EG. Despite ChCl being an electrolyte, the phase diagram exhibited ideal binary mixture behavior.

Jordy Kim Ung Ling et al.

Summary: Greater awareness of environmental sustainability has led to the transition from synthetic organic solvents to greener solvents in various industries. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), with their demonstrated applications in extraction of small-molecule bioactive compounds, are considered highly promising green solvents. However, the use of DES in biomacromolecule extraction has not been extensively studied. This review provides an overview of DES properties and discusses recent advances in DES extraction of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. It also highlights the importance of DES properties on extraction performance and identifies future research needs.

Choline chloride and ethylene glycol based deep eutectic solvent (DES) versus hydroxyl functionalized room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): assessing the differences in microscopic behaviour between the DES and RTILs

Sahadev Barik et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the differences in behavior between deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) in terms of their structure, dynamics, and intra- and intermolecular interactions. The research investigates three different ILs and one DES with similar functionalities through ensembled average and single-molecule spectroscopic techniques. The results show that, despite having similar functionalities, the DES and hydroxyl ILs exhibit significantly different microscopic behaviors, indicating the importance of intermolecular interactions in governing the behaviors of these solvent systems.

Do Deep Eutectic Solvents Behave Like Ionic Liquid Electrolytes? A Perspective from the Electrode-Electrolyte Interface

William Dean et al.

Summary: The differential capacitance as a function of potential and composition for choline chloride and ethylene glycol was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on glassy carbon. The capacitance-potential curves on glassy carbon were interpreted by the modified Gouy-Chapman model, showing a dampened U-shape similar to dilute electrolytes. Differential capacitance was found to be independent of composition on glassy carbon, but varied with different factors on Au and Pt electrodes. Additionally, these results suggest that deep eutectic solvents and H-bonded electrolytes with high salt concentrations have distinct properties from ionic liquids.

Insights on the water effect on deep eutectic solvents properties and structuring: The archetypical case of choline chloride plus ethylene glycol

Sara Rozas et al.

Summary: A combined experimental and theoretical approach was used to study the effect of water on the properties and nanostructuring of choline chloride: ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent. The results showed a large hydrophilic character of the solvent due to the efficient hydrogen bonding between water molecules and different components of the eutectic. The impact of water on the studied fluid depends largely on the concentration range, but the properties of the eutectic solvent can be maintained even with a relatively high water content.
