Hyperelastic structures: A review on the mechanics and biomechanics

Hossein B. Khaniki et al.

Summary: Soft structures have the ability to undergo reversible large strains and deformations under different types of loadings. Nonlinear elastic models have been developed to accurately model these large deformations and strains, as linear elastic models have their limitations. Among these models, hyperelastic strain energy density models provide a good fit for the mechanical behavior of biological tissues. With advancements in biomechanical devices, it is important to review the latest works in this field, as in-vivo and in-vitro studies have significantly increased in the past few years. Additionally, accurate modeling of soft structures is crucial for various applications such as prosthetics, soft robots, and wearing devices.

Analysis of stress and strain concentration around a centralized elliptical hole in a monodomain liquid crystal elastomer sheet

Yuefeng Jiang et al.

Summary: This study extends the discussion of circular holes in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) to more generalized elliptical holes. Using finite element methods, the stress and strain fields around a centralized elliptical hole in a LCE sheet subjected to uniaxial stretches are investigated. The shape factor, defined as the ratio of the minor-to-major axis of the ellipse, is the main focus of the study. Compared to common elastomers like neoHookean, LCEs exhibit higher stress and strain concentration factors (SCFs), with a slight deviation between the locations of maximal strain and maximal stress. The SCFs of LCEs increase more significantly than those of neoHookean with a sharper ellipse, and the deviation diminishes. The unusual behaviors of LCEs are attributed to the spontaneous strain induced by director rotation, and attempts are made to correlate stress and strain concentration behaviors to the spontaneous strain in this article.

A hyperelastic model to capture the mechanical behaviour and histological aspects of the soft tissues

Krashn Kr. Dwivedi et al.

Summary: This study explored a new hyperelastic model (Exp-Ln) for predicting the mechanical and structural responses of soft tissues. The experimental results showed that the Exp-Ln model accurately captured the mechanical behavior of soft tissues compared to other models. Additionally, there was a statistical correlation between the material parameters and histological parameters.

Investigating Mechanical Behaviours of PDMS Films under Cyclic Loading

Kyu Song et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the mechanical properties of PDMS films under both monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. The test results show that the monotonic elastic modulus of the films is not affected by thickness and tensile loading, while the cyclic elastic modulus varies depending on experimental parameters. By defining appropriate material parameters, the stress-strain behaviors of the PDMS films can be simulated, and reliable material coefficients for evaluating the structural integrity of the films using finite element technique are provided.

Poisson's ratio measurement through engraving the grid pattern inside poly(dimethylsiloxane) by ultrafast laser

Han Saem Cho et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the application of ultrafast laser processing to engrave a grid pattern for evaluating mechanical properties. By analyzing the optical images of the grid pattern, the Poisson ratio, Young's modulus, and shear modulus of PDMS were estimated with high accuracy, suggesting that this method is appropriate for providing quantitative mechanical properties of soft materials.

Composite Material of PDMS with Interchangeable Transmittance: Study of Optical, Mechanical Properties and Wettability

Flaminio Sales et al.

Summary: The study compared the mechanical, optical properties, and wettability of pure PDMS with two PDMS composites containing 1% paraffin or beeswax, finding that the composites had lower tensile strength and hardness compared to pure PDMS. However, the contact angle increased, with the paraffin additive showing the highest values. Additionally, the composites exhibited interesting results in spectrophotometry tests, where optical characteristics changed from opaque to transparent at high temperatures, showing potential for use in smart devices like sensors.
