Cerebral blood flow predicts multiple demand network activity and fluid intelligence across the adult lifespan

Shuyi Wu et al.

Summary: Preserving cognitive function in old age is crucial for public health. The relationship between cerebral hypoperfusion and cognitive ability is not well understood. This study found that cerebral blood flow is important for maintaining cognitive function, while its non-neuronal contributions to BOLD signals are an age-related confound.

Changes in dorsal root ganglion CGRP expression in mouse pinch nerve injury model: Modulation by Somatostatin type-2 receptor

Qiong Xiang et al.

Summary: This study found that antagonizing SSTR2 can inhibit CGRP expression and aggravate painful behavior in a model of compressed sciatic nerve injury. This provides important clues for understanding the pain mechanism and demonstrates the importance of CGRP in pain behavior.

Transcriptome dynamics of hippocampal neurogenesis in macaques across the lifespan and aged humans

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cellular heterogeneity and molecular characteristics of the hippocampi in macaques and aged humans using droplet-based single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq). The findings reveal the dynamics of the neurogenic lineage and the diversity of astrocytes and microglia in the hippocampus. Primate-specific markers are identified and their functions are validated. Additionally, active astrocytes and microglia with proinflammatory responses are observed in aged samples, suggesting their contribution to the decrease and variability of adult hippocampal neurogenesis.

Decreasing auditory input induces neurogenesis impairment in the hippocampus

Takaomi Kurioka et al.

Summary: The study found that sensorineural hearing loss, which causes hearing decline, suppresses hippocampal neurogenesis leading to cognitive decline. Using a CHL model, it was observed that both unilateral and bilateral CHL significantly decreased hippocampal neurogenesis, with more severe reduction in hippocampal neurogenesis in bilateral CHL compared to unilateral CHL. Additionally, microglial invasion and stress responses increased following CHL, suggesting auditory deprivation may be a risk factor for impaired hippocampal neurogenesis.

The mouse prefrontal cortex: Unity in diversity

Pierre Le Merre et al.

Summary: Recent studies on the mouse PFC have utilized the experimental toolbox available for this species, revealing cellular and structural differences in the PFC and neuronal activity related to theories about PFC functions. These data-rich studies in mice are expected to provide insights into the general prefrontal architecture and mechanisms underlying cognitive aspects of organized actions.
