A novel precoated anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor for real domestic wastewater treatment: In-situ formation, filtration performance and characterization of dynamic membrane

Yuan Yang et al.

Summary: Precoated dynamic membranes (PCDM) formed by retaining external particles on coarse supporting meshes can enhance dynamic membrane (DM) formation and improve its filtration performance. In this study, an in-situ rapid PCDM formation method using anaerobic sludge as a precoating material was proposed. The results showed that the PC-AnDMBR and SF-AnDMBR had stable effluent turbidity and satisfactory COD removal, attributed to the small pore size of the DM layers. The PCDM and SFDM were further characterized as cake and gel layers, with the gel layer thickness of PCDM larger than SFDM. These findings provide new insights into PCDM formation mechanisms and the application of AnDMBRs in wastewater treatment.

Critical review on membrane designs for enhanced flux performance in membrane distillation

Zhong Sheng Tai et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermal and membrane process that uses a hydrophobic membrane to separate volatile solutes at high temperatures. Although MD has excellent separation efficiency at low pressure, its commercialization has been hindered by low flux performance. This article reviews four key membrane innovations that could enhance the flux performance of MD and provides an update-to-date review of high-flux MD membrane innovations. The economic potential of MD membranes is also addressed.

Dopamine-functionalized PTFE membranes with enhanced flux and anti-fouling properties for membrane distillation of secondary effluent

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Using membrane distillation with dopamine-functionalized PTFE membranes (DA@PTFE) can effectively reduce membrane fouling caused by natural organic matter in secondary effluent, thus increasing the water production rate and stability of the MD system. The DA@PTFE membranes demonstrated improved MD performance with increased flow rate and reduced flux decay compared to pristine PTFE membranes. Additionally, the DA@PTFE membranes exhibited high water quality permeate with high rejection rates of conductivity and dissolved organic carbon. This study highlights the potential of DA@PTFE membranes for real application in reclaimed water treatment.

Desalination by the forward osmosis: Advancement and challenges

Nada Abounahia et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the prospects of forward osmosis (FO) membrane technology in desalination and water treatment. The simplicity, low energy consumption, and low fouling tendency of FO make it a promising alternative to pressure-driven membrane processes. The main objectives of this paper are to advance the modeling of the FO process and highlight the factors that determine its technical performance and economical perspectives, such as membrane characteristics and draw solute type. The commercially available FO membrane characteristics and the development of lab-scale fabricated membranes based on cellulose triacetate and thin-film nanocomposite membranes are discussed, along with their fabrication and modification techniques. The effects of different draw agents on FO performance and pilot-scale studies on the FO process are also analyzed. The paper concludes by stating the overall advances and drawbacks of the FO process, providing an overview of the major FO components that require additional attention and development for the benefit of the research and desalination scientific community.

Techno-economic assessment of a hybrid forward osmosis and membrane distillation system for agricultural water recovery

Agata Zarebska-Molgaard et al.

Summary: Despite the potential of FO-MD hybrid process in treating AD effluents, the obtained water fluxes are currently too low for industrial application. The energy consumption of the FO-MD system is much lower than the energy produced from AD effluents. The cost of water produced by the FO-MD system is influenced by the membrane module cost and the minimum water flux required for cost efficiency is identified.

Summary: New developments in pressure-and thermally driven membrane desalination technologies have the potential to treat high-salinity waters cost-effectively, especially when powered by low-cost solar electricity and thermal energy. This paper presents a comparative techno-economic assessment of two promising membrane technologies, osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) and batch-operated vacuum-air-gap membrane distillation (batch V-AGMD), for high recovery desalination. The results show that OARO is more cost-effective than batch V-AGMD at certain conditions.

Summary: Water scarcity has negative impacts on economic, social, and ecological balance. Wastewater reuse is a solution to this issue. Forward osmosis (FO) is a popular technology, but draw solution regeneration is a key challenge. Membrane distillation (MD) is an emerging technology that offers a cost-effective purification process. Research on the integrated FO-MD process is important to overcome the limitations of individual membrane processes.
