Investigation of asphalt oxidation kinetics aging mechanism using molecular dynamic simulation

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: Oxidative aging of asphalt makes pavement harder and brittle, resulting in complex cracking and other diseases. However, the microscopic causes and changes of oxidative aging are not clear. Molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the oxidation kinetic aging process of asphalt from a microscopic perspective. Aging of asphalt binders was simulated at different aging times to mimic oxidative aging. The proportions of SARA fractions, carbonyl index, and sulfoxide index were determined to establish asphalt molecular models for different aging states. These models were then used to investigate the microscopic properties and reveal the oxidation kinetic aging mechanism of asphalt.

Multi-scale characterization of lignin modified bitumen using experimental and molecular dynamics simulation methods

Shisong Ren et al.

Summary: This research combines MD simulation and laboratory experiments to explore the influence of lignin on the thermodynamic characteristics, rheological properties, and molecular structure of bitumen. The findings show that lignin can improve the modulus, elastic recovery, and rutting resistance of bitumen at a macroscale view, while increasing density, shear viscosity, and modulus at a microscale perspective. However, the self-healing ability and fatigue performance of lignin modified bitumen are weakened with the increase of lignin dosage. The correlations between the microscale and macroscale properties of lignin modified bitumen indicate that the physical and rheological properties of bitumen depend significantly on its molecular structure.
