Solar tower CSP plants with transcritical cycles based on CO2 mixtures: A sensitivity on storage and power block layouts

Ettore Morosini et al.

Summary: In this work, three innovative CO2-based binary mixtures (CO2 + C6F6, CO2 + C2H3N and CO2 + C4F8) are compared as working fluids for closed power cycles in CSP plants. The study finds that these mixtures can achieve higher cycle efficiencies than sCO2 cycles at minimum temperatures above 50 degrees C. The adoption of indirect storage systems is considered a viable solution for high temperature solar plants, with the three mixtures allowing for a reduction in LCOE (up to 10 $/MWh) and high capacity factors (above 70%) for a specific location.

Thermal efficiency gains enabled by using CO2 mixtures in supercritical power cycles

F. Crespi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of dopants to increase the critical temperature of Carbon Dioxide (sCO(2)), aiming to maintain high thermal efficiencies of sCO(2) cycles. It explores the impact of CO2-based mixtures on power block performance and considers hexafluorobenzene (C6F6) and titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) as possible dopants. The results show that CO2-blends with specific dopant percentages enable efficiencies exceeding 50% even at high ambient temperatures.

Preliminary investigation of the influence of equations of state on the performance of CO2 + C6F6 as innovative working fluid in transcritical cycles

G. Di Marcoberardino et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new working fluid for power cycles, a mixture of CO2 and C6F6, to address the impact of high ambient temperatures on the efficiency of sCO(2) power cycles. By increasing the content of C6F6, the critical temperature of the fluid is raised, allowing for a condensing cycle at ambient temperatures up to 45 degrees C. In addition, a sensitivity analysis reveals that the largest differences in predicting the efficiency of the cycle occur in the design of cycle components affected by the equation of state.

Solar Desalination Driven by Organic Rankine Cycles (Orc) and Supercritical CO2 Power Cycles: An Update

Agustin M. Delgado-Torres et al.

Summary: This article reviews and assesses the latest design proposals in the field of desalination powered by renewable energies, focusing on the use of solar power cycles. The organic Rankine cycle and the supercritical CO2 power cycle are considered as two promising options. The designs found in the literature are grouped into three main types of systems, each with different desalination technologies and cooling methods. Design recommendations are provided based on the assessment of these proposals.

Experimental characterisation of CO2 + C6F6 mixture: Thermal stability and vapour liquid equilibrium test for its application in transcritical power cycle

G. Di Marcoberardino et al.

Summary: Supercritical CO2 cycles are a promising alternative to steam cycles in concentrated solar power plants, offering increased efficiency and reduced costs. This study experimentally characterizes a CO2 blend with the addition of C6F6 as a dopant, allowing for a condensing cycle in hot environments. Thermal stability tests and Vapour Liquid Equilibrium measurements are conducted to accurately predict the thermodynamic properties of the mixture. Using Peng-Robinson equation with optimized binary interaction parameter, a thermodynamic assessment of the power cycle is performed, achieving an efficiency of 41.9% for an optimum mixture composition.
