Improving the digital capacity of schools by using the SELFIE tool for collective reflection

Summary: Schools have an important role in preparing students for the digital world and should focus on improving their digital capacity. This article presents insights from school leaders, teachers, and students from fourteen European countries, gathered through the SELFIE online tool, on improving schools' digital capacity. The findings highlight the need for better digital infrastructure in schools and more training for teachers. The unique SELFIE tool offers a comprehensive and structured process for collective reflection, providing valuable insights for school communities, policymakers, and researchers.

Summary: This paper explores the participation trends in interventions promoting self-evaluation exercises on the effective use of digital technologies in schools. Using a unique dataset of Spanish schools that utilized SELFIE, a self-reflection tool, it is found that schools with lower initial digitalization levels are more likely to voluntarily participate in SELFIE. Additionally, public interventions that promote SELFIE usage can increase participation but mainly attract digitally advanced schools. Thus, policy interventions should prioritize reaching out to schools in need to ensure equitable digital capacity development.

Empowering the collective reflection-based argumentation mapping strategy to enhance students' argumentative speaking

Summary: Designing learning strategies for EFL learners in the context of argumentative speaking is crucial. Argumentation mapping provides a visual representation of collaborative arguments, while collective reflection promotes reflective and higher-order thinking. This study combines the educational theory of collective reflection with argumentation mapping to create a Collective Reflection-based Argumentation Mapping (CR-AM) learning strategy. The findings indicate that the CR-AM strategy significantly improves students' argumentative speaking skills and lexical complexity. Students in the CR-AM group also showed higher tendencies of communication and collaboration.

Video-based reflection in teacher education: Comparing virtual reality and real classroom videos
