Superconductivity in the thorium nickel borocarbide ThNiBC

Bai-Zhuo Li et al.

Summary: We present the synthesis, crystal structure, physical properties, and first-principles calculations of a novel borocarbide compound, ThNiBC. The compound was synthesized using an arc-melting method and exhibited a tetragonal LuNiBC-type structure with an unusually low c/a ratio of 1.98. Physical property measurements revealed it to be a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with significant electron-electron scattering. Furthermore, bulk superconductivity at Tc = 0.7 K was demonstrated, displaying zero electrical resistivity, the Meissner effect, and a specific-heat jump. First-principles calculations indicated a relatively low density of states at the Fermi level and multiple electron-type Fermi surfaces.

Magnetic frustration driven by conduction carrier blocking in Nd2Co0.85Si2.88

Mily Kundu et al.

Summary: The intermetallic compound Nd2Co0.85Si2.88 with a triangular lattice exhibits single-phase synthesis only with a defective crystal structure. The system undergoes two magnetic transitions, with a high-temperature transition at around 140 K associated with a ferromagnetic interaction between itinerant Co moments, and a low-temperature transition at around 6.5 K due to the coupling between Nd-4f and Co-3d moments, which is antiferromagnetic in nature. Detailed investigations and density functional theory calculations suggest that the ground state of the compound is a magnetically frustrated spin glass with competing magnetic interactions of equal energies.

Itinerant antiferromagnetism in Co3S4-δ

Liang-Wen Ji et al.

Summary: This study presents experimental and theoretical investigations on the cobalt thiospinel Co3S4-8, revealing an antiferromagnetic transition at -60 K and a short-range magnetic ordering at around 120 K. The results suggest that Co3S4 is a rare example of itinerant-electron diamond-lattice antiferromagnet with moderate electron correlations.
