Magnetic guidewire steering at ultrahigh magnetic fields

Mehmet Efe Tiryaki et al.

Summary: With the advancement of magnetic actuation principles at ultrahigh fields (UHF), magnetic guidewires show great potential in medical procedures, particularly in MRI scanners. This study presents a magnetic guidewire design and steering strategy by elucidating the uniaxial magnetization behavior of permanent magnets. The proposed magnetic actuation framework allows for unique opportunities, such as in situ remagnetization, and enables next-generation magnetic robots to operate inside MRI scanners.

In situ sensing physiological properties of biological tissues using wireless miniature soft robots

Chunxiang Wang et al.

Summary: Compared with conventional medical imaging, implanted electronic sensors can continuously monitor advanced physiological properties of soft biological tissues. However, they are invasive and could cause inflammation. Here, we propose a minimally invasive method using wireless miniature soft robots to sense tissue physiological properties in situ. By controlling robot-tissue interaction with external magnetic fields, tissue properties can be recovered precisely from robot shape and magnetic fields, as visualized by medical imaging. We demonstrate that the robot can traverse tissues with multimodal locomotion and sense adhesion, pH, and viscoelasticity on ex vivo porcine and mice gastrointestinal tissues, tracked by x-ray or ultrasound imaging.

Summary: This study presents the design and manufacture of a flexible magnetic catheter capable of navigating the human anatomy in a follow-the-leader fashion. By optimizing magnetization profiles and using a dual-robot arm system to generate transient magnetic fields, minimal contact navigation through a three-dimensional bronchial tree phantom was achieved. Compared to mechanically equivalent designs, the magnetic catheter demonstrated improved tracking accuracy, reduced obstacle contact time, and decreased targeting errors.

Redundant Electromagnetic Control of an Endoscopic Magnetic Capsule Driven by Multiple Electromagnets Configuration

Jayoung Kim et al.

Summary: In this article, a novel stationary electromagnetic actuation system (EMS) and a redundant magnetic field control approach are proposed to enhance the magnetic actuation ability of a capsule endoscope. The proposed scheme utilizes the redundancy of multiple electromagnets to increase the magnetic force and reduce the peak input current. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in the magnetic field and lower input current compared to the conventional method, as well as extended operating time through reduced heating effects.
