Optimized preparation, thermal characterization and microwave absorption properties of deep eutectic solvents made by choline chloride and hydrated salts of alkali earth metals

Chiara Pelosi et al.

Summary: In this manuscript, we provided insights into the preparation and thermal properties of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) made by choline chloride and MgCl2(center dot)6H2O or CaCl2(center dot)6H2O for biomass valorization. We highlighted the use of a microwave coaxial antenna as a rapid and efficient heating probe, which significantly reduces the preparation time without affecting the product properties. Extensive studies on the thermal properties, stability, and degradation mechanism of the DESs were conducted using Differential Scanning Calorimetry, High-Resolution Thermogravimetry, and Fourier Transformed Infra-Red spectroscopy. The DESs were also found to be good microwave absorbers, indicating their potential for future MW-assisted processes.

Thermal decomposition kinetics of deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on choline chloride and magnesium chloride hexahydrate: New details on the reaction mechanism and enthalpy-entropy compensation (EEC)

Bojan Jankovic et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have gained significant attention in recent years and have been utilized in various fields. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the thermal decomposition mechanism of a specific DES type consisting of choline chloride (ChCl) and magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2·6H2O) in a molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2·6H2O-[Ch]Cl). The physical and chemical aspects of the decomposition mechanism and the influence of enthalpy-entropy compensation (EEC) on the reaction mechanism are explained. Kinetic analysis of the decomposition process using both model-free and model-based approaches reveals the importance of EEC in this DES type. The formation of intermediates and final products during the complex multiple step process is also discussed. The findings highlight the significant role of hydrogen bonding disruption in the energy compensation and provide valuable insights into the reaction kinetics and mechanisms. (c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. Comparison of physicochemical and thermal properties of choline chloride and betaine-based deep eutectic solvents: The influence of hydrogen bond acceptor and hydrogen bond donor nature and their molar ratios

Angelica Mero et al.

Summary: Within the field of green chemistry, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are becoming increasingly important due to their unique physicochemical properties. In this study, a comparative analysis was conducted on six different DESs to investigate the effects of various parameters such as the nature of the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and donor (HBD) and their molar ratio on properties including density, viscosity, refractive index, thermal stability, and thermal behavior. The results showed that DESs based on ethylene glycol (EG) exhibited the lowest density and viscosity, while those based on glycerol (Gly) had the highest values. Switching from choline chloride (ChCl) to betaine (Bet) as the HBA resulted in higher viscosity and density. Increasing the amount of HBD in the DESs led to lower viscosity, increased density for Gly-based DESs, and decreased density for EG and levulinic acid (LevA)-based DESs. The refractive index decreased with increasing HBD portion, but using ChCl instead of Bet as the HBA resulted in a higher refractive index. The thermal stability of the DESs was strongly influenced by the HBD used, with EG-based DESs being less stable than LevA-based ones and Gly-based DESs exhibiting the highest stability. Additionally, three characteristic mass loss events were observed in all DESs, attributed to the evaporation/degradation of the HBD, HBD-HBA interaction, and the HBA. Finally, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses showed that all DESs can be used as solvents due to their liquid state at room temperature and their ability to maintain liquid state over a wide temperature range.

Pretreatment and sugar recovery of oil palm fronds using choline chloride: calcium chloride hexahydrate integrated with metal chloride

Eng Kein New et al.

Summary: In this study, different valences of metal chlorides were used as co-catalysts in a Type II deep eutectic solvent (DES) system to enhance the pretreatment of oil palm fronds (OPF). The results showed that using ChCl:CaCl2 center dot 6H(2)O/1 wt% CuCl2/30 vol% water and ChCl:CaCl2 center dot 6H(2)O/1 wt% FeCl3/20 vol% water as pretreatment conditions could achieve high xylose recovery from OPF. Additionally, these co-catalysts were effective in removing lignin, xylan, and arabinan from OPF. Therefore, using DES + co-catalyst system with additional water content can be a promising approach for OPF pretreatment in biorefinery processes.

Understanding the role of temperature in structural changes of choline chloride/glycols deep eutectic solvents

Francesco Gabriele et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), a green alternative to organic solvents, have high viscosity that limits their utilization. In this study, pure DESs based on choline chloride (ChCl) mixed with diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TEG), polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG 200), and ChCl/TEG/water mixtures were investigated. The effects of temperature on their properties and structures were studied. The results showed that temperature had slight influence on the structures of both DESs and DES/water systems, but significantly increased their transport properties.
