Regional and tele-connected impacts of the Tibetan Plateau surface darkening

Shuchang Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, using climate and glacier models, the authors found that under a high-emission scenario, darkening of the Tibetan Plateau surface albedo will lead to an increase in temperature, strengthen South Asian monsoon precipitation, exacerbate the South Flood-North Drought pattern, and cause a loss in glacier volume.

Robust projection of East Asian summer monsoon rainfall based on dynamical modes of variability

Daokai Xue et al.

Summary: The study assesses the future changes in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation by projecting it onto the two leading dynamical modes of internal variability. The results show increasing trends and daily variability in both modes, indicating potential hydrological extremes in East Asian regions in the coming decades. This study provides evidence of the robust Asian monsoon rainfall response to anthropogenic warming.

Effects of complex terrain on the shortwave radiative balance: a sub-grid-scale parameterization for the GFDL Earth System Model version 4.1

Enrico Zorzetto et al.

Summary: This study presents a parameterization method for incident solar radiation over complex topography regions in Earth system models, and tests its effectiveness using Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations. The results show that considering the spatial variability of solar irradiance due to terrain interactions is important for accurately representing radiation processes in mountainous areas.

Improving snow albedo modeling in the E3SM land model (version 2.0) and assessing its impacts on snow and surface fluxes over the Tibetan Plateau

Dalei Hao et al.

Summary: This study improves the snow radiative transfer model to consider non-spherical snow grain shapes and internal mixing of LAPs with snow, and evaluates their impacts on surface energy budget and water cycle over the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that the improved model captures the overall snow distribution well and has smaller biases in snow cover fraction. The study also finds that internal mixing of LAPs with snow leads to larger snow albedo reduction and snowmelt, affecting surface energy budget and water cycle.

Topographic Correction of Optical Remote Sensing Images in Mountainous Areas

Rui Chen et al.

Summary: Rugged terrain poses challenges to optical remote sensing, and topographic correction (TC) is crucial for accurate land cover classification and parameter retrieval. This systematic review examines 426 publications from 1980 to 2022, revealing a growing interest in TC driven by the availability of high-resolution remote sensing data and DEMs. Most studies focus on low-elevation regions, with increasing attention to China. Satellite acquisitions for TC show a seasonal imbalance, concentrated in months with favorable solar illumination.

Effects of spring Tibetan Plateau land temperature anomalies on early summer floods/droughts over the monsoon regions of South East Asia

Ismaila Diallo et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the spring land surface temperature in the Tibetan Plateau has a significant influence on downstream summer droughts and floods in East Asia. The study suggests that considering these temperature anomalies can improve predictions of extreme hydroclimatic events in Southern and Eastern Asia.

Three-Dimensional Surface Downwelling Longwave Radiation Clear-Sky Effects in the Upper Colorado River Basin

D. R. Feldman et al.

Summary: In complex terrain, non-parallel surfaces receive radiation from adjacent surfaces, which affects the overall longwave radiative effect. By using observed land-surface temperatures, we calculate the three-dimensional longwave radiative effect over the Upper Colorado River Basin. The results show that this effect has significant implications, especially in the eastern and southeastern parts of the basin, for mountainous ecohydrology simulations.

Dalei Hao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and evaluated the impacts of sub-grid topographic representations on surface energy balance and boundary conditions. The results showed that sub-grid topographic effects have significant impacts on surface energy balance and boundary conditions, and the T configuration better captured these effects.
