Evaluation of failure of slopes with shaking-induced cracks in response to rainfall

Jiawei Xu et al.

Summary: The response of slopes with shaking-induced cracks to subsequent rainfall and the corresponding landslide-triggering mechanisms were examined in centrifuge model tests. The failure pattern of slopes subject to both shaking and then rainfall differs from those subject to only rainfall. The detrimental effect of cracks on soil displacement was more evident under heavy post-shaking rainfall, resulting in rapid and massive landslides.

Translational upper bound limit analysis of shallow landslides accounting for pore pressure effects

Wengui Huang et al.

Summary: Many rainfall-induced landslides are shallow. Simple approaches like the infinite slope model are often used for regional slope stability analysis or landslide hazard mapping. However, the infinite slope model underestimates safety factor due to the absence of boundary effects. This paper presents a new upper bound limit analysis (UBLA) method that incorporates a novel failure mechanism to capture the boundary effect. The new approach is validated using finite element limit analyses and shows better performance than the conventional log-spiral UBLA method. Based on the results, a new analytical shallow landslide model is developed, which retains simplicity but significantly improves accuracy, making it a promising alternative for routine analysis such as landslide hazard mapping.

Effects of desiccation cracks and vegetation on the shallow stability of a red clay cut slope under rainfall infiltration

Qian-Feng Gao et al.

Summary: The study examines the shallow stability of a red clay cut slope during rainfall and finds that the presence of desiccation cracks can cause shallow failure, reducing the factor of safety. Control of crack development is crucial for slope safety, and vegetation with longer roots significantly improves slope stability.

Analysis and assessment of slope instability along international mountainous road in North Africa

Waleed Abdelmoghny Metwaly Ogila

Summary: The study reveals that sliding incidents along the mountainous roads in northeastern Algeria are mainly caused by the clay layer below the water table and slope deformation after drying-wetting cycles. During rainy seasons, the weight of saturated upper slope soils decreases matric suction, weakening and softening the slope materials. It concludes that a combination of suggested stabilizing methods should be implemented simultaneously to prevent huge damages along the mountainous road slopes.

Effects of preferential flow induced by desiccation cracks on slope stability

Jia-Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: Desiccation cracks on soil slopes can lead to increased permeability, reduced shear strength, and potential landslides. A study conducted full-scale model tests on a cracked soil slope under rainfall-evaporation cycles, revealing dynamic variations in crack patterns and preferential flow induced by the cracks during rainfall. The findings suggest the failure process of the cracked slope can be separated into three stages based on crack patterns and failure modes, highlighting the importance of considering dynamic changes within desiccation cracks when simulating seepage and stability, and implementing specific treatment measures to prevent slope failure at different stages.
