Three-dimensional numerical simulation of flow past a rotating step cylinder

Ming Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the flow past a rotating step cylinder with a diameter ratio of 0.5 and a Reynolds number of 150 was investigated using three-dimensional numerical simulations. The results show that vortex shedding occurs for both cylinders at rotation rates of 0, 0.5, and 1, but is suppressed for the larger cylinder at rotation rates of 2 and 3, and fully suppressed for both cylinders at a rotation rate of 4. The suppression of vortex shedding for the larger cylinder or both cylinders has significant effects on the wake.

Dynamic Mode Decomposition and Its Variants

Peter J. Schmid

Summary: Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is a technique for factorization and dimensionality reduction of data sequences, which simplifies complex evolution processes to their dominant features and essential components. It has been widely applied in various fields beyond fluid dynamics as well.

Unveiling the competitive role of global modes in the pattern formation of rotating sphere flows

J. Sierra-Ausin et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatio-temporal pattern formation of wake flow past a streamwise rotating sphere from a dynamical system perspective. It reveals the connection between rotating waves and helical patterns within the wake. The research finds that, for low rotation rates, the flow field undergoes a transition similar to that of flow past a static sphere, but with a rapid variation in flow frequencies due to rotation. The transition from a single helix pattern to a double helix structure within the wake displays hysteric behavior in several regions. Eventually, the interaction between single and double helix structures leads to temporal chaos.

Summary: This study investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of short cylinder and TSB through wind tunnel tests and 3D simulations, exploring the effects of Reynolds number, aspect ratio, angles, and end shape on aerodynamic parameters. The research also discusses the impact of end shape on drag reduction and vortex shedding frequency.
