Selective Potassium Deposition Enables Dendrite-Resistant Anodes for Ultrastable Potassium-Metal Batteries

Yanhong Feng et al.

Summary: Researchers have designed a self-supporting electrode composed of bismuth and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (Bi-80/NrGO) as an anode host for potassium-metal batteries, which addresses the issues of instability at the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and uncontrollable growth of potassium dendrites. The K@Bi-80/NrGO electrode exhibits unique hollow pores that provide K+-diffusion channels and deposition space, maintaining electrode structure and SEI stability. This work demonstrates the potential for developing stable potassium-metal anodes with precise nucleation, smooth diffusion, and dendrite inhibition.

Low-Temperature Potassium Batteries Enabled by Electric and Thermal Field Regulation

Yanfang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a strategy to regulate electric field and thermal field simultaneously is reported, providing a fast and uniform deposition surroundings for potassium ion in potassium metal batteries (PMBs). By using a highly ordered 1D nanoarray electrode, the electric field is uniformed and temperature fluctuation is reduced. The electrode achieves a high-areal capacity of 10 mAh cm(-2) and reveals the dependence of potassium nucleation on temperature. These findings demonstrate the validity of the strategy and provide guidelines for the rational design of advanced electrodes for PMBs.

Revealing the closed pore formation of waste wood-derived hard carbon for advanced sodium-ion battery

Zheng Tang et al.

Summary: The formation mechanism of closed pores in hard carbon anodes for sodium-ion batteries, using waste wood-derived hard carbon as a template, has been systematically established. The study shows that the high crystallinity cellulose in nature wood decomposes to form the walls of closed pores, impacting the carbon layer and influencing battery performance. The research provides insights into enhancing battery performance by understanding closed pore formation in hard carbon materials.

Enabling Fast Na+ Transfer Kinetics in the Whole-Voltage-Region of Hard-Carbon Anodes for Ultrahigh-Rate Sodium Storage

Xiuping Yin et al.

Summary: This study reports an ultrafast sodium storage throughout the whole-voltage region by rationally adjusting the physical parameters of hard carbons through a ZnO-assisted etching strategy. It is found that the storage capacity of sodium is related to the p-band center of the carbon material, and the balance between adsorption energy and diffusion barrier is critical in improving charge-storage kinetics. The prepared hard carbon microspheres exhibit high rate performance and unprecedented electrochemical performance at extremely low temperature.
