Sensitized photon avalanche nanothermometry in Pr3+ and Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 colloidal nanoparticles

Zuzanna Korczak et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effect of temperature on sensitized photon avalanche (PA) emission in Yb3+ and Pr3+ co-doped NaYF4 nanoparticles. The results show significant variations in PA nonlinearity, gain, and threshold under temperature changes. Moreover, a new thermometric parameter, PA pump power threshold, with high relative sensitivities, is proposed.

Indefinite and bidirectional near-infrared nanocrystal photoswitching

Changhwan Lee et al.

Summary: Photoswitchable probes, such as organic fluorophores and proteins, have limitations including photodegradation and operation only in UV or visible spectral regions. This study introduces avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs) that can be switched bidirectionally with near-infrared (NIR) light, offering improved stability. The mechanism of the photoswitching process is elucidated through modeling and measurement of the photon avalanche properties of single ANPs. The unlimited, reversible photoswitching of ANPs enables multilevel optical patterning and sub-A localization superresolution optical nanoscopy.

Tuning Phonon Energies in Lanthanide-doped Potassium Lead Halide Nanocrystals for Enhanced Nonlinearity and Upconversion

Zhuolei Zhang et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates the controllable synthesis of low-phonon-energy KPb2X5 (X=Cl, Br) nanoparticles and the ability to tune nanocrystal phonon energies as low as 128 cm(-1). KPb2Cl5 nanoparticles are moisture resistant and can be efficiently doped with lighter lanthanides. The low phonon energies of KPb2X5 nanoparticles promote upconversion luminescence from higher lanthanide excited states and enable highly nonlinear, avalanche-like emission from KPb2Cl5 : Nd3+ nanoparticles. The realization of nanoparticles with tunable, ultra-low phonon energies facilitates the discovery of nanomaterials with phonon-dependent properties, precisely engineered for applications in nanoscale imaging, sensing, luminescence thermometry and energy conversion.

A Generalized Approach to Photon Avalanche Upconversion in Luminescent Nanocrystals

Artiom Skripka et al.

Summary: Photonavalanching nanoparticles (ANPs) with highly nonlinear upconverted emission have great potential for subdiffraction imaging, nanoscale sensing, and optical computing. We use Gd3+-assisted energy migration to tune the emission wavelengths of Tm3+-sensitized ANPs and generate highly nonlinear emission from Eu3+, Tb3+, Ho3+, and Er3+ ions. The upconversion intensities of these spectrally discrete ANPs scale with a nonlinearity factor s = 10-17 under 1064 nm excitation at power densities as low as 7 kW cm(-2). This strategy can be extended to fluorophores adjacent to ANPs, as shown with CdS/CdSe/CdS core/shell/shell quantum dots.

Preventing cation intermixing enables 50% quantum yield in sub-15 nm short-wave infrared-emitting rare-earth based core-shell nanocrystals

Fernando Arteaga Cardona et al.

Summary: Short-wave infrared (SWIR) fluorescence has the potential to become the new gold standard in optical imaging for biomedical applications due to advantages such as lack of autofluorescence, weak photon absorption, and reduced photon scattering. However, the lack of bright and biocompatible probes is a challenge. This study demonstrates the growth of homogeneous or heterogeneous shell domains on optically-active α-NaYF4:Yb:Er core nanocrystals and the control of atomic scale organization to improve the emission properties.

Size-Dependent Photon Avalanching in Tm3+ Doped LiYF4 Nano, Micro, and Bulk Crystals

Magdalena Dudek et al.

Summary: Photon avalanche is a highly nonlinear mode of upconversion that can increase luminescence intensity with minute increments of pumping power. The characteristics of photon avalanche, such as nonlinearity and intensity, are found to depend on the material volume and surface quenching. Theoretical simulations provide insights into the physical processes that influence photon avalanche performance. Moreover, photon avalanche single beam super-resolution imaging has been achieved for the first time.

Min Ying Tsang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the simultaneous utilization of upconversion and downconversion luminescence properties by doping praseodymium (III) and ytterbium (III) ions into a nanosized fluoride matrix for biomedical applications. The emission modes in a single nanoparticle include near infrared downconversion luminescence for bioimaging and ultraviolet C range upconversion luminescence for germicide action. Additionally, the potential of near infrared luminescence bioimaging through biological tissues is shown.

Surface-Sensitive Photon Avalanche Behavior Revealed by Single-Avalanching-Nanoparticle Imaging

Kevin W. C. Kwock et al.

Summary: Using single-nanocrystal imaging, design-dependent heterogeneity in ANP threshold intensity (Ith) was uncovered, with variations in shell thickness identified as the primary contributor to ANP-to-ANP Ith heterogeneity. Nanocrystals with an average shell thickness of approximately 6 nm showed Ith heterogeneity beyond what was expected from statistical measurements using TEM. These results provide a principal guide for the design and application of ANPs to environmental sensing.

Interface Pattern Engineering in Core-Shell Upconverting Nanocrystals: Shedding Light on Critical Parameters and Consequences for the Photoluminescence Properties

Damien Hudry et al.

Summary: Advances in controlling energy migration pathways in core-shell lanthanide-based hetero-nanocrystals rely on assumptions about distribution of optically active centers within individual particles. Different interface patterns can be formed depending on shell growth conditions, allowing for atomic-scale resolved maps of individual particles and engineering of interface patterns for color output and quantum yield modifications. Total alloying between core and shell domains is possible with ultra-small particles as seeds, paving the way for a new generation of core-shell Ln-based HNCs with better control over atomic-scale organization.
