Summary: Individuals with intellectual disability are at increased risk of early-onset cardiovascular diseases, particularly cerebrovascular disease, stroke, heart failure, and deep vein thrombosis. The severity of intellectual disability is positively associated with the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This study highlights the importance of recognizing the cardiovascular disease risks in individuals with intellectual disability.

Physical activity levels of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities in Northern China

Ya-Qing Yuan et al.

Summary: Limited research has shown that the level of physical activity (PA) among Chinese children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities is remarkably low, with only 29.5% meeting the PA recommendation. Boys engage in more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and have higher energy expenditure than girls. The PA levels among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities show a declining trend with age, with those aged 6-12 performing more MVPA and having greater energy expenditure compared to older age groups.

Summary: Physical activity has positive effects on the mental health of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities, particularly in terms of psychological health and cognitive function. The effects are influenced by factors such as study design, intervention components, and participant characteristics. The RE-AIM framework can be used to assess the impact of physical activity interventions and translate scientific evidence into practice.

The after-school sedentary behavior status among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities

Yaqing Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sedentary behavior (SB) status of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID) during the after-school period. The results showed that they spent a large portion of the after-school period in SB, particularly engaged in more time on screen-based SB. Future efforts should focus on developing and implementing interventions to reduce after-school SB in this population segment.

Family factors associated with physical activity in children with intellectual disability: A systematic review

Yaru Hao et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the influence of family factors on physical activity in children with intellectual disability. The study finds that encouragement, support, and involvement by family members play a crucial role in determining children's engagement in physical activity. However, parental psychological factors, socioeconomic status, responsibilities, and electronic devices can both promote and hinder physical activity for children with intellectual disability. The findings highlight the importance of the family unit in determining activity levels for these children.

Summary: This study compared the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on the motor skills of active and inactive children with ID. The results showed a significant difference in gross and fine motor skills between the active and inactive groups after a one-year movement restriction. It is recommended that parents and educators design diverse exercises and encourage them to participate in physical activity programs.

Effects of classroom-based active breaks on cognition, sitting and on-task behaviour in children with intellectual disability: a pilot study

E. Mazzoli et al.

Summary: A 5-week active breaks intervention was found to improve working memory in children with intellectual disability, while other cognitive functions and on-task behavior did not show significant effects. However, stepping time and bouts of sitting were positively affected by the intervention. Further research is needed to clarify the effects on cognition and explore other potential benefits in this population.

Correlates of physical activity in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review

L. Sutherland et al.

Summary: This study aimed to systematically review correlates of physical activity in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Findings showed a focus on intrapersonal-level correlates, with better motor development being positively associated with physical activity, while inconsistent results were found for other factors such as age and cardiorespiratory fitness. No consistent evidence for interpersonal, organizational, or environmental-level correlates was identified, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
