Membrane stiffening in Chitosan mediated multilamellar vesicles of alkyl ether carboxylates

Leonardo Chiappisi et al.

Summary: Based on the dynamics of the membrane, we hypothesize that the number of layers in polyelectrolyte mediated surfactant multilamellar vesicles depends on membrane undulations. Experimental findings show that the membrane becomes stiffer and the fluctuations of the layers are strongly coupled in time and space when surfactants are complexed with chitosan. This results in a low number of layers in the vesicles.

Cation-Induced Fibrillation of Microbial Glycolipid Biosurfactant Probed by Ion-Resolved In Situ SAXS

Alexandre Poirier et al.

Summary: Biological amphiphiles exhibit rich phase behavior, with the ability to switch between micellar, vesicular, and fibrillar phases by changing pH or selecting the appropriate metal ion. This study investigates the fibrillation and hydrogelation of a microbial glycolipid, G-C18:1, triggered by alkaline earth and transition metal ions. In situ monitoring reveals the morphological evolution from micelles to crystalline fibers or wormlike aggregates, depending on the metal ion employed. The results suggest that fibrillation is driven by metal-ligand interactions or charge screening.

Metallogels from a Glycolipid Biosurfactant

Alexandre Poirier et al.

Summary: Low-molecular-weight molecules of biological origin can self-assemble in water, and their structure can be controlled by pH, temperature, and ionic strength. Adding metal salts can lead to the formation of vesicles, micelles, wormlike gels, or fibrillar hydrogels. This study demonstrates the preparation of metallogels from a specific microbial glycolipid.

The bending rigidity of the red blood cell cytoplasmic membrane

Sebastian Himbert et al.

Summary: The membrane bending modulus, kappa, is an important mechanical property of cells, especially red blood cells. By studying the bending of red blood cell cytoplasmic membranes in the absence of spectrin and ATP, we found that the relatively small membrane bending modulus may confer advantages in biological processes.

Bending Rigidity, Capacitance, and Shear Viscosity of Giant Vesicle Membranes Prepared by Spontaneous Swelling, Electroformation, Gel-Assisted, and Phase Transfer Methods: A Comparative Study

Hammad A. Faizi et al.

Summary: This study compares the membrane capacitance, bending rigidity, and shear surface viscosity of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) formed by various commonly used methods. The results show that the bending rigidity values are relatively similar across all methods except for agarose hydration. The capacitance values are similar except for vesicles prepared via PVA gel hydration. Membranes prepared by gel-assisted and phase-transfer methods have higher shear viscosity, likely due to remnants of polymers and oils in the lipid bilayer structure.

Data Analysis and Background Subtraction in Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy

Ingo Hoffmann

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of background correction in neutron spin echo measurements, reviews different methods to subtract the buffer, and studies the impact of small errors in background subtraction on results. In the large dynamic range of modern neutron spin-echo spectrometers, multiple effects become visible in a single measurement, particularly for vesicles where membrane undulations and translational diffusion affect the intermediate scattering function. The study investigates how considering these factors differently can affect the results obtained from data analysis.
