Modelling of Wildfire Susceptibility in Different Climate Zones in Montenegro Using GIS-MCDA

Gojko Nikolic et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine the susceptibility to wildfires in the coastal municipality of Budva and the northern municipality of Rozaje in Montenegro, using multicriteria GIS decision analysis (GIS-MCDA). Nine criteria were used, and weighting coefficients were assigned based on AHP and F-AHP procedures. The results show that both models perform well in predicting wildfire susceptibility in the different climatic zones of Budva and Rozaje.

A Gridded Solar Irradiance Ensemble Prediction System Based on WRF-Solar EPS and the Analog Ensemble

Stefano Alessandrini et al.

Summary: This study uses the WRF-Solar EPS and the AnEn calibration method to generate weather forecasts for atmospheric parameters over the contiguous United States. The forecasts are calibrated and verified using radiation data based on geostationary satellites. The results show that the AnEn calibrated forecasts from WRF-Solar EPS can improve the accuracy of solar irradiance predictions across the United States compared to a system based solely on deterministic forecasts from WRF-Solar.

Mapping territorial vulnerability to wildfires: A participative multi-criteria analysis

Miguel Riviere et al.

Summary: In this article, we propose a flexible and relevant vulnerability assessment framework for evaluating fire risk using a spatial multicriteria decision analysis method. By using ecological, land-use, and sociodemographic data, we create vulnerability maps for three categories of assets: population, ecosystems, and infrastructures. The results reveal significant differences in the contribution of indicators to risk and vulnerability and show variations in spatial patterns and exposed assets, helping identify primary and secondary vulnerability hotspots and underlying drivers. Considering multiple subcomponents of risk and vulnerability can aid local decision makers in prioritizing measures and the use of multicriteria decision analysis promotes knowledge sharing and discussion among stakeholders.

Non-parametric comparative analysis of the spatiotemporal pattern of human-caused and natural wildfires in Galicia

M. F. Marey-Perez et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the spatiotemporal dynamics of human-caused and natural fires in Galicia. The distribution of natural wildfires remains stable over years, while arson wildfires show variation in distribution. Different models and covariates are needed to predict the hazard from each wildfire type.

Winter and spring climate explains a large portion of interannual variability and trend in western US summer fire burned area

Ronnie Abolafia-Rosenzweig et al.

Summary: This study predicts summer fire burned area in the western United States from 1984 to 2020 and finds that winter and spring climate conditions play an important role in summer fire activity. The study also highlights the significance of antecedent climate conditions in non-forested and middle-to-high elevation areas.

Analog Ensemble Methods for Improving Satellite-Based Intensity Estimates of Tropical Cyclones

William E. Lewis et al.

Summary: Accurate and reliable tropical cyclone intensity estimates are crucial for warning and forecasting globally. The study developed ADT-AnEn and ADTE-AnEn techniques, which showed significant improvement in reducing error and bias in TC intensity estimates in the North Atlantic and Eastern Pacific basins. ADTE-AnEn performed particularly well for extreme intensities and will be further tested in operations in 2021.

Evaluation and intercomparison of wildfire smoke forecasts from multiple modeling systems for the 2019 Williams Flats fire

Xinxin Ye et al.

Summary: Wildfire smoke is a significant concern for human and environmental health, but biomass burning emissions and smoke remain sources of uncertainty in air quality forecasts. Evaluation of 12 state-of-the-art air quality forecasting systems during the Williams Flats fire in 2019 revealed discrepancies in fire emissions, aerosol optical depth, and surface PM2.5 forecasts, highlighting the need for improved methodologies to predict smoke emissions and enhance forecast accuracy.
