Predictors of academic grades: The role of interest, effort, and stress

Ramona Obermeier et al.

Summary: During adolescence, experiences of stress increase due to changes and challenges in individuals, social life, and education. However, effort and interest can protect students' academic development from the negative effects of stress. This study investigated how different aspects of stress (ability to cope and helplessness) influence grit (interest and effort), and whether grit explains the relationship between stress and academic grades. The results showed that the ability to cope positively affected effort, while helplessness negatively affected interest. Grit mediated the relationship between stress and academic grades. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed to prevent the negative effects of stress on students' academic development.

Parenting the Exceptional Social-Emotional Needs of Gifted and Talented Children: What Do We Know?

Dimitrios Papadopoulos

Summary: Parenting gifted and talented children is a unique journey that requires a focus on their exceptional social-emotional needs. Studies show that authoritative parenting and family support play a crucial role in positively impacting the developmental trajectory of gifted children, while authoritarian parenting can have negative effects on their well-being. Enhancing caregiving capacity through reducing parental stress can significantly influence the growth of gifted children.
