Influence of the Level of Sex Hormones in the Blood of Gilts on Slaughter Characteristics and Meat Quality

Krzysztof Tereszkiewicz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of hormone levels during the reproductive cycle of gilts on slaughter characteristics and meat quality. The results showed that increased levels of LH affected some properties of meat and blood. The concentration of LH also influenced the post-slaughter temperature of certain muscles.

Obtaining Reliable RT-qPCR Results in Molecular Diagnostics-MIQE Goals and Pitfalls for Transcriptional Biomarker Discovery

Christian Graetz et al.

Summary: This article discusses the development pipeline for transcriptional biomarkers in molecular diagnostics and highlights the importance of a reliable gene transcript quantification strategy. The focus is on the application of the MIQE guidelines for biomarker discovery, from signature validation to routine diagnostic applications. The advantages and pitfalls of holistic RNA sequencing for biomarker development are described, as well as the RT-qPCR confirmation process. Successful examples of RT-qPCR as a fast and reproducible quantification method in routine molecular diagnostics are provided. The importance of key steps in RT-qPCR, such as reverse transcription, reference gene selection, and automated data analysis software, are accurately described according to the MIQE guidelines. In conclusion, RT-qPCR is a valuable tool in establishing disease-specific transcriptional biomarker signatures and has great potential in molecular diagnostics or personalized medicine.

Safety and concerns of hormonal application in farm animal production: a review

Mohammed M. Qaid et al.

Summary: Veterinarians and animal producers have historically used non-essential compounds as growth promoters for farm animals, but some of these compounds may have carcinogenic effects on consumers. While anabolic hormones are permitted globally, they are not allowed in the EU. Illegally adding drugs to animal feeds for economic benefit poses risks. This article reviews the safety and hazards of anabolic compounds as endocrine disruptors on food, animals, public health, and the environment, and provides recommendations for risk management and avoidance.

Anabolic Steroids in Fattening Food-Producing Animals-A Review

Kristyna Skoupa et al.

Summary: Anabolic steroids have significant effects on animal tissues and can cause irreversible morphological and histological changes. The use of these steroids in animal fattening raises concerns about consumer health and there is a need for new detection methods. The abuse of anabolic steroids can result in various side effects, including organ damage, brain atrophy, and behavioral changes. While the use of steroids is permitted in many countries, it is strictly banned in all European Union countries. Serum analysis and tissue structure changes may serve as potential new methods for detecting steroid misuse.
