The Role of Thyroid Hormone Synthesis Gene-Related miRNAs Profiling in Structural and Functional Changes of The Thyroid Gland Induced by Excess Iodine

Chunyu Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, the harmful effects of excess iodine have gained more attention, but the exact mechanism remains largely unknown. This study investigated the role of miRNAs in regulating genes related to thyroid hormone synthesis in response to chronic high iodine exposure. The results showed that high iodine exposure led to subclinical hypothyroidism and hypothyroidism, and significantly altered the levels of thyroid hormone synthesis genes and associated miRNAs. These findings suggest that miRNAs may play an important role in thyroid dysfunction caused by excess iodine, providing potential targets for intervention.
