Multicenter analysis on the non-suicidal self-injury behaviors and related influencing factors-A case study of left-behind children in northeastern Sichuan

Ling Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence rate of NSSI behaviors, levels of anxiety and depression, and relevant sociodemographic factors among left-behind children in northeastern Sichuan, China. The study found a relatively high rate of NSSI behaviors among left-behind children and significant correlations with factors such as gender, parents' divorce, age, depression, and anxiety.

Classification of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children: results from penalised logistic regression analyses in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study

Laura S. van Velzen et al.

Summary: Despite efforts to predict suicide risk in children, reliable identification of those who will develop suicide thoughts or behaviors remains unsuccessful. Applying a machine-learning approach, this study found that mainly clinical psychiatric factors can distinguish children with suicide thoughts or behaviors from those without.

Can cognition help predict suicide risk in patients with major depressive disorder? A machine learning study

Shuqiong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study developed a machine learning algorithm-based suicide risk prediction model using cognition data in patients with major depressive disorder. Cognitive deficits were found to be an important risk factor in predicting suicide attempts, and when combined with demographic characteristics, improved the effectiveness of the predictive model. Machine learning models can help clinicians identify specific risk factors for suicide attempts in MDD patients, aiding in quick and accurate detection of those at high risk and proactive treatment decisions.

Predictors and consequences of non-suicidal self-injury in relation to life, peer, and school factors

I Baetens et al.

Summary: The study found a bidirectional association between NSSI and attitudes towards school as well as stressful life events. Academic achievement was negatively associated with NSSI, while peer relationships were not predictive or consequential.

Insomnia symptoms and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: understanding temporal relations and mechanisms

Delia Latina et al.

Summary: The study proposed a theoretical model linking insomnia symptoms and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in a bidirectional manner. It found that heightened depressive symptoms and impulsivity resulting from insomnia can increase NSSI, while the shame associated with NSSI triggers repetitive negative thinking, subsequently increasing insomnia. The results suggest that depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between insomnia and increased NSSI, but worry and rumination do not mediate the link between NSSI and increased insomnia.

The Association of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury with Quality of Life and Mental Disorders in Clinical Adolescents-A Network Approach

Summary: Our study found that mental disorders mediate the relationship between most quality of life dimensions and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with family problems being directly associated with NSSI engagement. The study highlights the importance of network modelling in clinical research.

Summary: The prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in developing countries varies significantly, but there is an overall increasing trend globally. Despite potential differences in understanding and context, NSSI is almost equally prevalent in both developed and developing countries.
