Genetic algorithms for planning and scheduling engineer-to-order production: a systematic review

Anas Neumann et al.

Summary: This paper provides a systematic review of Genetic Algorithm (GA) applications in solving planning and scheduling problems in Engineer-To-Order (ETO) contexts. The review identifies the key characteristics of ETO projects and the common features of GAs used. However, it is found that current research has not fully considered all the characteristics of ETO projects. The study also highlights the recurrent encoding formats and most frequently used genetic operators, while pointing out the lack of diversity maintenance methods, adaptive mechanisms, parameter tuning, and hybridization with machine learning models in this context.

Exploring systemic factors creating uncertainty in complex engineer-to-order supply chains: Case studies from Norwegian shipbuilding first tier suppliers

Erlend Alfnes et al.

Summary: A novel method has been developed to identify factors contributing to uncertainty in shipbuilding first-tier suppliers hindering the delivery of ETO products efficiently. The major challenges faced by ITO systems include failures in understanding customer requirements, providing engineering capacity, and managing interfaces. The study suggests a change program to reduce uncertainty, focusing on process and control considerations before addressing demand and supply-side changes.

A multi-objective scheduling method for distributed and flexible job shop based on hybrid genetic algorithm and tabu search considering operation outsourcing and carbon emission

Wenxiang Xu et al.

Summary: This study addresses the general distributed flexible job shop scheduling problem, considering operation sequencing, job-to-cell assignment, and operation-to-machine assignment. The model also takes into account the need for operation outsourcing and incorporates four optimization objectives including makespan, costs, quality, and carbon emission. By using the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process, the multi-objective problem is transformed into a single objective problem. A hybrid genetic algorithm and tabu search is developed to improve solving efficiency, showing performance advantages over traditional algorithms.
