Vacancy-Driven Stabilization of Sub-Stoichiometric Aluminate Spinel High Entropy Oxides

Christopher Riley et al.

Summary: Despite recent developments in high entropy oxides (HEOs), most previously reported structures are stoichiometric and stabilized through intermixing cations. This study demonstrates for the first time that cationic vacancies can significantly increase configurational entropy and stabilize phase-pure HEOs. By comparing stoichiometric and sub-stoichiometric spinels with different cationic species, it was found that the same number of cationic species were needed to stabilize both types at high temperature calcination. The properties of these complex spinels can be tuned through the incorporation of cationic vacancies and different divalent metals, making them promising for various applications.

Understanding the Role of Entropy in High Entropy Oxides

Solveig S. Aamlid et al.

Summary: The field of high entropy oxides (HEOs) challenges traditional materials science paradigms by studying the properties arising from profound configurational disorder caused by multiple elements sharing a single lattice site. This disorder can give HEOs functional properties that surpass their nondisordered counterparts. However, the true magnitude of configurational entropy and its role in stabilizing new phases and generating superior functional properties have been underexplored. Understanding configurational disorder in existing HEOs is crucial for rational design of new HEOs with targeted properties.

Band Gap Narrowing in a High-Entropy Spinel Oxide Semiconductor for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Rowan R. Katzbaer et al.

Summary: High-entropy oxides (HEOs) with randomly mixed metal cations in a crystalline oxide lattice exhibit unique properties, including band gap narrowing in a high-entropy aluminate spinel oxide. The band gap narrowing arises from the broadening of the energy distribution of the 3d states due to variations in electronegativities and crystal field splitting. As a catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, high-entropy oxide A5Al2O4 outperforms single-metal end members but suffers from catalyst deactivation due to the formation of a passivating layer.

Summary: High-entropy oxide perovskites (HEOPs) possess great potential due to their flexible composition and electron structure. However, conventional synthesis methods often result in low surface area, limited active sites, and poor catalytic activity. This study presents a metal-tannin coordination assembly strategy to synthesize HEOP nanoparticles with abundant oxygen vacancies and small size. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibit better catalytic activity and stability in moisture- or SO2-containing conditions.

Entropy Engineering and Tunable Magnetic Order in the Spinel High-Entropy Oxide

Graham H. J. Johnstone et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the magnetic properties of spinel oxides and explores the impact of gallium substitution on its magnetism. It is found that the ferrimagnetic order in spinel high-entropy oxides is robust but highly tunable. The tunability is correlated with site selectivity between cations and different sites in the spinel structure. Gallium substitution also leads to an overall reduction in transition metal valence, and the effect is primarily accommodated by manganese.
