Multilayer thin film metallic glasses under nanoscratch: Deformation and failure characteristics

Karuppasamy Pandian Marimuthu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a nanoscratch technique to investigate the deformation and failure characteristics of multilayer thin film metallic glasses (TFMGs). The results show that the layer pattern and modulation ratio greatly influence the failures of the thin films under nanoscratch conditions. When compared with the pattern (layer-1 / layer-2) = (Zr65 / Zr55), multilayer TFMGs with the layer pattern = (Zr55 / Zr65) exhibit better tribological performances regardless of the substrate type. This study is important for finding the appropriate combination of layer pattern and modulation ratio to ensure good adhesion between multilayer TFMG and substrate.

Determination of material properties of bulk metallic glass using nanoindentation and artificial neural network

Soowan Park et al.

Summary: In this study, an artificial neural network is combined with finite element nanoindentation to evaluate free volume model parameters for bulk metallic glass. A material database is generated based on finite element analysis, and an artificial neural network is trained to correlate the free volume model and indentation parameters. The feasibility of this approach is experimentally validated.

Simultaneous extraction of the elastic-plastic properties of a thin film and its substrate from an identifiability-based design of depth-sensing nanoindentation testing

Vincent Fauvel et al.

Summary: This work presents an approach to identify the elasto-plastic properties of a thin film and substrate using nanoindentation P-h curves. A finite element model is used to simulate the nanoindentation tests and identify the parameters. The identification process relies on the sensitivity of the nanoindentation force and a designed experiment to ensure reliable identification. The identified parameters are validated by comparing experimental and numerical results.

Determination of plastic properties of weld metals using an optimal regression of tensile and hardness test data

Giyeol Han et al.

Summary: A new method for obtaining the coefficients of plastic constitutive laws of weld metal through tensile and hardness tests was proposed. The method establishes a general expression between hardness ratio and flow stress model coefficients to predict tensile loads, and uses a simplex direction search algorithm to derive optimal regression coefficients that minimize the difference between predicted and experimental loads. The material constants obtained from this method were consistent and reliable when applied to general line welded parts.

Determination of parameters of free volume model for Zr-based BMG via nanoindentation

Jungmoo Han et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of Zr55Cu30Ag15 bulk metallic glass was studied using the free volume theory, with experiments and finite element models showing the advantages of the implemented model. Two key model parameters were identified through sensitivity studies, highlighting the effectiveness of the pressure-dependent free volume model in describing load-depth responses and shear band behavior in nanoindentation tests.

Effect of the initial temperature on the shock response of Cu50Zr50 bulk metallic glass by molecular dynamics simulation

Peng Wen et al.

Summary: The effect of initial temperature on the shock response of Cu50Zr50 bulk metallic glass was investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that the shock Hugoniot relationship shows temperature dependence, with flow stress decreasing at high temperatures, indicating lower shear resistance. Additionally, a shock-induced melting regime was identified at high temperatures and pressures.

Evaluation of mechanical properties of Zr-Cu-Al-Ni TFMG using nanoindentation

Uihwan Jeong et al.

Summary: The nanomechanical properties of thin-film metallic glasses (TFMG) with different thicknesses were evaluated through nanoindentation experiments. The effects of film thickness and substrate type on material property evaluation were investigated, with the parameters of the free volume model (FVM) also influenced by the growth of free volume with increasing thickness.
