Alcoholysis of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer catalyzed by alkaline: A kinetic study based on in situ FTIR spectroscopy

Yuhang He et al.

Summary: A new method based on in situ FTIR spectroscopy was developed to study the alcoholysis of EVA. This method allows for accurate prediction of the reaction rate and is applicable to industrial production processes and other alcoholysis systems. It provides a more efficient and convenient alternative to traditional methods for studying reaction kinetics involving polymers.

Microflow system for controlled synthesis of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers: Continuous copolymerization and kinetic study

Yuhang He et al.

Summary: The ethylene content in ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) plays a crucial role in its usage. However, the conventional batch reactor for EVA synthesis faces challenges in controlling the reaction environment and temperature. To overcome these problems, a microflow system was designed to enable the synthesis of EVA with controlled ethylene content. The obtained EVA in the microflow system showed a lower concentration of ethylene sequences compared to that in the batch reactor, as revealed by 13C NMR spectra. Additionally, a simple kinetic model was developed using a stop-flow method in the microflow system to measure the reactivity ratios of ethylene and vinyl acetate copolymerization.

Nucleophilic Substitution at Tricoordinate Sulfur-Alkaline Hydrolysis of Optically Active Dialkoxysulfonium Salts: Stereochemistry, Mechanism and Reaction Energetics

Marian Mikolajczyk et al.

Summary: Optically active dialkoxyisopropylsulfonium salts were synthesized by methylation (ethylation) of optically active alkyl isopropanesulfinates. The alkali hydrolysis of methoxy(alkoxy)sulfonium salts revealed the formation of methyl isopropanesulfinate and alkyl isopropanesulfinate, with a slightly predominant inversion of configuration at the sulfur atom. DFT calculations suggested a stepwise addition-elimination (A-E) mechanism with the formation of tetracoordinate S-IV sulfurane intermediates. Furthermore, the DFT calculations demonstrated that the recombination of hydroxy anion with the methoxy(alkoxy)sulfonium cation, followed by direct decomposition, is the most energetically favorable pathway leading to the parallel formation of the two most stable primary sulfuranes.

Reaction mechanism study on transesterification in synthesis of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer catalyzed by zinc(II) carboxylate: A combination of DFT and kinetics analyses

Junyao Shen et al.

Summary: Density functional theory was used to investigate the catalytic polymerization mechanism of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer. The rate-limiting step was found to be the transesterification reaction, which can be significantly lowered by zinc carboxylate catalyst. The influence of the carboxylate group on catalytic efficiency was revealed, and zinc pivalate showed the highest activity.

The reaction mechanism investigation of sulfonamides with OH radical by DFT

Seyda Aydogdu et al.

Summary: Sulfonamides, an important group of antibiotics, have been found as micropollutants in the environment, posing a threat to human health. This study used the DFT method to predict the reaction mechanisms of selected sulfonamides with OH radicals and calculated their electronic properties and descriptors to predict the reaction products.
