Prediction of Shipping Noise in Range-Dependent Environments

Emmanuel K. K. Skarsoulis et al.

Summary: This study presents a prediction model for shipping noise in range-dependent environments based on coupled-mode theory. It enhances existing adiabatic normal-mode approaches without significantly increasing computational effort. The model categorizes environmental changes, precalculates and stores eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and coupling matrices, allowing for efficient computation of the acoustic field of arbitrary noise source distributions over a given sea area. Examples of noise calculations are provided for benchmark setups in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, and comparisons with fully adiabatic predictions are made. The study also demonstrates the effect of applying range propagation limitations in a numerical propagation model for shipping noise predictions.

Statistical analysis of measured underwater radiated noise from merchant ships using ship operational and design parameters

Masahiro Sakai et al.

Summary: Ships unintentionally emit underwater noise due to propeller cavitation during normal operations. The International Maritime Organization began reviewing guidelines for reducing underwater radiated noise (URN) from ships in 2022. Research has been conducted on the characteristics of URN from ships, including quantitative variations in URN levels based on ship size and speed. This study conducted underwater sound measurements in deep water (>300m) along a sea lane, applying regression analysis to determine the source levels of URN from merchant ships using ship length, ship speed ratio, and draft ratio. The analysis simplified the source levels based on propeller cavitation and discussed variations in URN levels for different ship types.

Sustainable transition towards greener and cleaner seaborne shipping industry: Challenges and opportunities

Olakunle Oloruntobi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the concerns and expectations in the maritime sector due to the technological revolution in seaborne shipping. Using a three-stage methodology, the study analyzes the causes and consequences of this revolution, as well as the current state and future projections in the maritime shipping industry. Findings reveal the development of various technologies such as simulated training, unmanned vessels, 5G networks, drones, and digital transformation, which are anticipated to shape the industry's future. The integration of information and communication technology enhances productivity and energy efficiency in ports, while low-energy systems and emissions benefit future waterborne services.

Extensive Use of Habitat-Damaging Fishing Gears Inside Habitat-Protecting Marine Protected Areas

Allison L. Perry et al.

Summary: Marine protected areas (MPAs) are important for halting marine biodiversity loss, but the effective protection of designated sites is often overlooked. This study focused on MPAs in Europe and found that high-risk fishing activities were common within these areas, especially in larger offshore sites. Intense high-risk fishing inside reef and sandbank MPAs was associated with poorer conservation status of these habitats.

Underwater radiated noise from marine vessels: A review of noise reduction methods and technology

Tom A. Smith et al.

Summary: This review assesses the application of devices and technologies to reduce vessel noise and finds that there are already a wide range of technologies that can be applied to many vessels. However, the lack of quantitative data on the effectiveness of many noise-reducing technologies limits legislation and adoption by the marine industry.

Avoiding sharp accelerations can mitigate the impacts of a Ferry's radiated noise on the St. Lawrence whales

Dominic Lagrois et al.

Summary: Exposure to anthropogenic noise from the commercial fleet is a significant factor affecting the aquatic environment. This study focuses on ferry ships and finds that the noise level is higher during low-speed acceleration/deceleration compared to operational speed. It suggests that taking measures such as avoiding sudden speed changes near whales could greatly reduce noise pollution.

A decade of underwater noise research in support of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive

Nathan D. Merchant et al.

Summary: Underwater noise from human activities is recognized as a threat to marine life. The European Union has implemented legislation to address this issue and stimulate research efforts. Studies have shown adverse effects of noise on individual animals at different levels. However, defining "Good Environmental Status" for underwater noise requires additional research and alternative approaches. Measures to reduce noise levels have been limited, but there is a growing need to develop and implement quieting measures.

Underwater Anthropogenic Noise Pollution Assessment in Shallow Waters on the South-Eastern Coast of Spain

Francisco Javier Rodrigo et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic noise poses a growing threat to marine life, and monitoring and controlling underwater noise pollution has become increasingly important. This research presents the results of a three-year long-term monitoring campaign in the port of Cartagena, Spain, analyzing the monthly and annual variation patterns of low-frequency continuous noise. The study provides accurate acoustic values to establish threshold levels and offers recommendations for monitoring programs and regulations to control underwater noise pollution.

Marine soundscape and fish biophony of a Mediterranean marine protected area

Gabriella La Manna et al.

Summary: This study characterized the soundscape of the Capo Caccia-Isola Piana Marine Protected Area in Italy and identified the main biological and anthropogenic components, with a focus on fish sounds. Results showed that sound pressure levels were significantly higher during the day, with certain frequency bands dominated by boat noise. Anthropogenic noise was loudest in the A zone, indicating a lack of protection from acoustic pollution. Additionally, impulsive sounds from invertebrates, snapping shrimps, and fish were the dominant biological components of the soundscape. The study provides baseline data for monitoring future changes and suggests measures to reduce noise impact on marine biodiversity.
