Seismic stratigraphy and development of a modern isolated carbonate platform (Xuande Atoll) in the South China Sea

Y. Liu et al.

Summary: This study used high-resolution seismic surveys and shallow drilling to investigate the internal structure and development of Xuande Atoll, an isolated carbonate platform formed since the early Miocene. Five seismic sequences were identified, indicating the platform formation and expansion during the early and middle Miocene, followed by a shrinking stage before the formation of the isolated platform in the middle Miocene. The final shrinking stage in the late Miocene may be attributed to rapid tectonic subsidence and increased terrigenous sediment inputs due to the formation of the semi-marginal sea. The peri-platform area showed a falling sea-level sequence predominantly characterized by mass wasting deposits.

The abyssal giant sinkholes of the Blake Bahama Escarpment: evidence of focused deep-ocean carbonate dissolution

Thibault Cavailhes et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of abyssal giant depressions located at the toe of the Bahamian carbonate platform, along the Blake Bahama structurally-controlled Escarpment (BBE). The depressions are elliptical in shape, with diameters ranging from 255 m to 1819 m. The density of the depressions increases at the intersection of recognized structural lineaments.

Dissolution of a submarine carbonate platform by a submerged lake of acidic seawater

Matthew P. Humphreys et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical and biogeochemical processes in recently discovered submarine sinkholes on Luymes Bank, Caribbean Netherlands. The measurements reveal the presence of a gas bubble plume, which contains an acid lake with low-oxygen and acidic seawater. The acid lake actively dissolves the carbonate platform and may provide a novel mechanism for sinkhole formation and growth. The conditions within the acid lake reflect extreme impacts of proposed climate change mitigation schemes. Other sinkholes on Luymes Bank may serve as venues for studying the impacts of anthropogenic CO2 uptake by the ocean.

Early development of carbonate platform (Xisha Islands) in the northern South China Sea

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Sedimentological, paleontological, and geochemical data from core XK-1 on the Xisha Islands provides detailed documentation of early carbonate development around the Oligocene-Miocene transition in the northern South China Sea. The evolution of carbonate systems along the northern and southern margins of the South China Sea was influenced by tectonic subsidence, sea level fluctuations, and physical erosion. The onset of carbonate sedimentation in the SCS was shaped by sea level, local tectonics, and paleoclimatic conditions.

High-resolution acoustic data revealing periplatform sedimentary characteristics in the Xisha Archipelago, South China Sea

Benjun Ma et al.

Summary: Newly collected high-resolution acoustic data are used to describe the morphologies and sedimentary characteristics along the slopes of isolated carbonate platforms in the Xisha (Paracel) Archipelago. The study identifies the importance of gravity flow, bottom current, and deep-water circulation in shaping the slope morphology of the carbonate platforms.
