Mild water and salt stress improve water use efficiency by decreasing stomatal conductance via osmotic adjustment in field maize

Qi Liao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that mild water and salt stress can enhance the water use efficiency of maize by affecting leaf osmotic adjustment and hydraulic resistance to reduce stomatal conductance and lower net photosynthesis rate. Furthermore, combined water and salt stress can reduce transpiration, stabilize yield, and improve grain water use efficiency by decreasing stomatal conductance, maintaining photosynthetic capacity, and enhancing harvest index, providing a novel approach for efficient water and salt management.

Physiological and transcriptional evaluation of sweet sorghum seedlings in response to single and combined drought and salinity stress

Zhiheng Wang et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of drought and salinity stress on sweet sorghum seedlings. Results showed that the growth and photosynthesis of sweet sorghum were inhibited under the three stresses, with the combined treatment having the strongest effect. Differently expressed genes involved in various processes were identified through analysis. Sweet sorghum responds to stress through down-regulating photosynthesis, increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, and adjusting phytohormone signaling.

Engineering drought and salinity tolerance traits in crops through CRISPR-mediated genome editing: Targets, tools, challenges, and perspectives

Rahul Mahadev Shelake et al.

Summary: Drought and salinity are major abiotic stresses that affect crop health and agricultural production. Plant responses to these stresses involve multiple processes such as sensing, transcription, and translation. The use of CRISPR genome engineering tools and modern genomic-assisted breeding approaches can help improve crops and enhance their stress tolerance. This review summarizes plant responses to drought and salinity stresses at different levels and highlights the application of CRISPR tools in studying plant adaptations to stress. Integrating CRISPR tools with modern breeding approaches is beneficial for identifying genetic factors that regulate plant stress-response pathways.

Dissecting and modelling the comparative adaptation to water limitation of sorghum and maize: role of transpiration efficiency, transpiration rate and height

E. J. van Oosterom et al.

Summary: The study found that there was limited effect of species and height on transpiration efficiency (TE), but significant effect on transpiration rate per unit green leaf area (TGLA), mainly attributed to differences in biomass allocation. Maize had higher TGLA compared to the 3dwarf sorghum, potentially producing more biomass. The simulation study predicted crossover interactions for grain yield between species and total water use, highlighting that similarity in TE and differences in TGLA can influence comparative adaptation to water limitation.
