Statin-induced Liver Injury Patterns: A Clinical Review

Leon D. Averbukh et al.

Summary: Since their introduction in 1987, statins have become widely prescribed medications, but they have been associated with side effects such as mild liver dysfunction. Statin-induced liver injury can present as hepatocellular or cholestatic patterns, with severe liver injury being rare.

The food industry by-products in bread making: single and combined effect of carob pod flour, sugar beet fibers and molasses on dough rheology, quality and food safety

Dragana Soronja-Simovic et al.

Summary: This study explored the utilization of food industry by-products to produce high-quality value-added bread with extended shelf-life, while avoiding synthetic preservatives. The combination of carob pod flour, sugar beet fibers, and sugar beet molasses had a significant impact on dough rheology and bread quality. The optimal sample chosen was C7.5M3F5 after considering various factors such as dough resistance, extensibility, crumb quality, and mold inhibition.

Hepatoprotective Effect of Carob Pulp Flour (Ceratonia siliqua L.) Extract Obtained by Optimized Microwave-Assisted Extraction

Nikola Martic et al.

Summary: The antioxidant capacity and hepatoprotective effect of carob pulp flour were examined. Optimal process parameters for maximizing total antioxidant activity were determined. In vivo experiments in mice demonstrated that carob extract attenuated liver injury and prevented oxidative stress induced by harmful substances.

Lipid-Lowering Effects of Carob Extracts (Ceratonia siliqua): Proposed Mechanisms and Clinical Importance

Marko Nemet et al.

Summary: Carob pulp has been recognized as an effective natural product for the treatment of dyslipidemia due to its beneficial effects on lipid metabolism. Its main components, polyphenols and insoluble fiber, have been found to lower lipid levels and potentially affect the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and adipose tissue. Additionally, carob products exhibit antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and vascular-protective activity.

Maria de la Fuente-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Supplementation with carob fruit extract, alone or in combination with aerobic training, can accelerate the recovery of cardiometabolic health in mice with metabolic syndrome subjected to caloric restriction, leading to weight loss, improved lipid profile and insulin sensitivity, as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Challenges in determination of rheological properties of wheat dough supplemented with industrial by-products: carob pod flour and sugar beet fibers

Dragana Soronja-Simovic et al.

Summary: The addition of sugar beet fibers and carob flour to dough increased its resistance to extension and decreased its extensibility. The correlation between the extensographic and the Kieffer micro method showed high compatibility in terms of dough extensibility results, but not in resistance measurements. It is clear that a precise and complete definition of rheological properties requires the use of other methods beyond empirical ones.

Targeting dyslipidemia by herbal medicines: A systematic review of meta-analyses

Mohammad Sadegh Adel Mehraban et al.

Summary: This systematic review critically assessed meta-analyses of controlled trials evaluating herbal medicines for dyslipidemia. Various herbal remedies such as vegetable oils, phytosterols, tea, soy protein, nuts, and curcumin were found to potentially improve lipid profiles. However, more well-conducted controlled trials are needed to determine the effective doses of these herbal medicines.

New insight and potential therapy for NAFLD: CYP2E1 and flavonoids

Kaiyue Wang et al.

Summary: NAFLD prevalence has been increasing over the years, with no effective treatment due to its complex pathogenesis. Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is reported to play a crucial role in NAFLD development, and flavonoids have been shown to have a hepatoprotective effect by regulating CYP2E1 activity. Flavonoids may potentially become effective drugs for NAFLD treatment in the future.

Phenotypic Changes in Macrophage Activation in a Model of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease using Microminipigs

Daiki Yoshii et al.

Summary: NAFLD is a common chronic liver disease, and research has shown that an increase in cholesterol content in a high-fat diet can lead to an increase in macrophage numbers. During the development of NAFLD, the number of M2-like macrophages increases in the early stages, while the number of M1-like macrophages increases in the late stages, resulting in a liver condition similar to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Tissue-Specific Effects of Leptin on Glucose and Lipid Metabolism

Sandra Pereira et al.

Summary: Leptin's discovery is closely tied to its role in regulating body weight, but it also has significant effects on glucose metabolism and fat accumulation. Leptin's regulation of glucose metabolism involves both central and peripheral mechanisms, influenced by insulin signaling pathways. The extent of leptin's action varies depending on the tissue, sex, and context, with potential therapeutic applications for conditions like hyperglycemia and lipodystrophy. Further exploration of leptin's mechanisms in different tissues is crucial for fully understanding its physiological role and maximizing its therapeutic potential.
