Role of pretreatment type and microbial mechanisms on enhancing volatile fatty acids production during anaerobic fermentation of refinery waste activated sludge

Qinghong Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different pretreatments on VFAs production from RWAS, and found that alkaline pretreatment showed the highest VFAs yield. The release of CRAM-like compounds and tannin substances in Thermal-PMS and APG groups significantly influenced the acidogenesis and acetogenesis processes. Economically and efficiently, alkaline pretreatment is recommended for the anaerobic fermentation of RWAS.

Coconut shell ash enhances short-chain fatty acids production from anaerobic algae fermentation

Yun Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel method to enhance short-chain fatty acids production from anaerobic algae fermentation by using coconut shell ash. Coconut shell ash increased the pH and alkalinity of digestate, promoted solubilization, hydrolysis and acetogenesis processes, and enriched specific microorganisms that contributed to the production of SCFAs. Anaerobic fermentation residue with ash has potential to be used as fertilizer, offering economic and environmental benefits for practical applications.

Mechanisms of potassium permanganate pretreatment improving anaerobic fermentation performance of waste activated sludge

Qiuxiang Xu et al.

Summary: The addition of potassium permanganate can enhance the generation of short-chain fatty acids in anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge, by providing more substances for their production. Additionally, it effectively reduces the categories and total detected frequency of refractory organic pollutants in fermentation liquid, leading to improved quality of the produced SCFAs.
