Reducing livestock snow disaster risk in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau due to warming and socioeconomic development

Summary: Global warming can have both positive and negative impacts on society, and past research has mostly focused on assessing risks while overlooking potential opportunities. A simulation study on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau revealed that climate change and socioeconomic development contribute equally to reducing livestock loss in snow disasters. Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius instead of 2 degrees Celsius would result in a 5% reduction in benefits, requiring a 135% increase in prevention capacity to offset this reduction.

This issue is particularly evident in the case of livestock herding on common grazing lands, where insurance could lead to overstocking and reduced profitability when the pastures are degraded.
