Livestock, methane, and climate change: The politics of global assessments

Ian Scoones

Summary: The article examines the framing of global assessments of livestock-derived methane emissions and highlights the importance of a holistic systems approach. It argues for considering diverse livestock systems and acknowledges the potential benefits of extensive livestock systems. The article also criticizes the limitations and political consequences of global assessments.

Rebuilding rural community cooperative institutions and their role in herder adaptation to climate change

Gongbu Zeren et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of community cooperative institutions in improving adaptive capacity and response to snow-related catastrophes in rural communities on the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that these institutions are more effective than market-based adaptation strategies in improving livelihood outcomes. By clarifying entitlements and redistributing benefits, these institutions can meet individual needs while also promoting collective action and equal access to resources.

Reducing livestock snow disaster risk in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau due to warming and socioeconomic development

Tao Ye et al.

Summary: Global warming can have both positive and negative impacts on society, and past research has mostly focused on assessing risks while overlooking potential opportunities. A simulation study on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau revealed that climate change and socioeconomic development contribute equally to reducing livestock loss in snow disasters. Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius instead of 2 degrees Celsius would result in a 5% reduction in benefits, requiring a 135% increase in prevention capacity to offset this reduction.

Risk, informal institutions, and index insurance

Francis Annan et al.

Summary: The interaction between informal institutions and formal markets is a key economic question, especially in developing countries. This study examines the demand for an innovative weather insurance product and investigates how informal risk-sharing can act as a barrier or support to the uptake of index-based insurance. The findings provide alternative explanations for empirical puzzles and highlight the potential of combining premium subsidies and informal networks to promote better weather risk protection.

Impacts and synergies of weather index insurance and microcredit in rural areas: a systematic review

Yu Lu et al.

Summary: Weather is a major risk factor for rural households, which is further exacerbated by climate change. Weather index insurance and microcredit are increasingly being adopted by farmers worldwide. Despite positive economic impacts, the effects of these financial services on the poorest populations are controversial, and their impacts on ecological systems are mainly negative. Combining these instruments may generate positive synergistic effects on building socioeconomic resilience to climate risks, but it may also introduce economic risks to local financial institutions.

Formal insurance for the informally insured: Experimental evidence from Kenya

Kelsey C. Hample

Summary: The study conducted an experiment among Kenyan adults to investigate the impact of formal insurance adoption on informal sharing behaviors. The results showed that formal insurance reduced informal group sharing, while increases in past informal group sharing reduced the adoption of formal insurance. Policy makers promoting formal insurance adoption must consider the consumer substitution between formal insurance and informal sharing.

The Welfare Effects of Index-Based Livestock Insurance: Livestock Herding on Communal Lands

Erwin Bulte et al.

Summary: Agricultural insurance for smallholders in developing countries has become a topic of interest in academic and policy circles, with the expectation that it will protect farmers from production shocks and encourage modernization. However, the welfare effects of insurance are found to be ambiguous, and may actually exacerbate inefficiencies within the institutional context in which smallholders operate. This issue is particularly evident in the case of livestock herding on common grazing lands, where insurance could lead to overstocking and reduced profitability when the pastures are degraded.

Financial inclusion and agricultural total factor productivity growth in China

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: This study constructs a composite index of rural financial inclusion and examines its impact on agricultural total factor productivity growth in China. It finds that financial inclusion significantly contributes to productivity growth and the effect varies geographically. The positive impact is achieved by providing loans to support production transformation based on specialization and cooperation.
