Effects of heat stress on the chemical composition, oxidative stability, muscle metabolism, and meat quality of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Summary: The study investigated the effects of chronic heat stress (HS) on the chemical composition, oxidative stability, muscle metabolism, and meat quality of Nile tilapia. Chronic HS (32 degrees C) decreased growth performance, lipid and protein content, and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. HS also led to increased lipid and protein oxidation, water and cooking loss, and decreased fragmentation index and pH in the meat. Metabolomic analysis revealed alterations in amino acid, lipid, and nucleotide metabolism. These findings highlight the detrimental effects of HS on oxidative stability, meat quality, flavor, and nutrition.

Economic factors, choice of tilapia species, and production system are identified as key factors affecting production in the region. The lack of profitability due to cheaper wild caught and imported tilapia is identified as the overriding factor affecting tilapia aquaculture production in Southern Africa.

Pesticide effects on fish cholinesterase variability and mean activity: A meta-analytic review

Summary: Fish cholinesterases (ChEs) such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) are sensitive to a variety of toxicants, making them common biomarkers for environmental contamination. In a systematic review and meta-analysis, it was found that BChE response was more variable than AChE regardless of tissue. Factors such as fish size and life stage influenced ChEs variability and mean activity, with insecticides showing stronger inhibitory effects compared to herbicides and fungicides.

Additionally, the mix of these animal proteins had the best overall response in terms of growth and gut/liver health. Both HM and PBM also downregulated the expression of inflammatory-related genes, with HM showing a greater effect, indicating a potential beneficial role of insect meal in trout diets.
